Dear all,

I'm hoping that someone with more knowledge than myself concerning the family of Berkeley of Dursley, Gloucestershire might be able to answer this question.

Roger de Berkeley V of Dursley died about 1220-21, and was succeeded by his son and heir Henry de Berkeley. Henry was living on 1 May 1221 when he reached an agreement with Lecuaria, Roger's widow, concerning her dower [1]. He was dead before 24 September 1221 when the sheriff of Gloucester was ordered to grant the custody of the land and heirs of Henry de Berkeley to Engelard de Cigogné together with the marriage of the heirs [2]. Henry's heir was his infant son John. In March 1225, the custody of the lands and heir of Henry de Berkeley was given to Oliver son of Engelard de Cigogné whilst Engelard was in Gascony [3]. In July 1227, the custody of the land and heir of Henry de Berkeley, the marriage of the heir, and the marriage of Agnes widow of Henry were again granted to Engelard [4].

In April 1237, the king ordered the sheriff of Gloucester to assist Engelard de Cigogné for the rights of John de Berkeley, his nephew (nepotis sui), who is in his custody by the king's grant, and not to allow any hurt or injury to be inflicted on him, and if there is any damage or injury, it has to be corrected without delay [5].

Does anyone know of any other evidence which shows a relationship between the family of Berkeley of Dursley and that of Engelard de Cigogné. From this Close Roll entry it appears that John de Berkeley was the nephew, or more likely the grandson, of Engelard de Cigogné. My guess is that that Agnes, wife of Henry de Berkeley was a daughter of Engelard.

Regards,

John

Hi John,

There is an article being published in the next edition of Foundations (FMG) that examines Engelard's associations with Henry de Berkeley's predecessors and successors, as well as correcting a number of errors with the traditional story of the first family of Berkeley. Best wishes,

TB

Hi all,

Well I read the article today. The author considers it most likely that Agnes wife of Henry de Berkeley was a sister of Engelard de Cigogné.

Regards,

John
