Hi Group:

Does anyone have the ancestry of Sadb, who was the wife of Tairrdelbach
Ua Brian, son of Diarmait Ua Brian, (d. 1118) and Mor, daughter of Ruaidri na
Saide Buide Ua Conchobar, King of Connacht? On 29 August 2001, Stewart
Baldwin posted very helpful information entitled "Donnell O'Brien, King of
Thomond." He mentioned that Sadb was the daughter of Donnchad Balc, King of
Osraige, but no additional information on Sadb. Was Donnchad Balc descended
from Cellach mac Cerbaill, King of Osraige, who died in 908, and if so, how
was he descended?

Thanks in advance for your help.

According to the Banshenchas, Sadb was a daughter of an otherwise
unidentified Donnchad mac Gilla Pátraic. Although the father is not
explicitly identified except for his name and patronym, it is
reasonably certain that he was of the dynasty of Osraige, in which the
names Donnchad and Gilla Pátraic were both common. There were no less
than three Donnchad mac Gilla Pátraic's who were king (or joint king)
of Osraige, of whom the Donnchad mac Gilla Pátraic who died in 1039
(king of Osraige and Laigin) seems too early, and the Donnchad mac
Gilla Pátraic who died in 1162 (joint-king of Osraige) seems too late
to be a father-in-law of someone who died in 1118. This leaves
Donnchad Balc mac Gilla Pátraic Ruad, king of Osraige, who died in
1123, as the clear candidate for the father of Sadb.

The name of the father of Gilla Pátraic Ruad, king of Osraige (d.
1103), is not explicitly stated in the sources, but it can be shown
from the Banshenchas that he was a son of Domnall mac Gilla Pátraic,
who died in 1087. [See Bart Jaski, "Additional notes to the Annals of
Ulster", Ériu 48 (1997), 103-52 (at p. 147).]

Domnall (d. 1087) was in turn was son of Gilla Pátraic (d. 1055), son
of Donnchad (d. 1039), son of Gilla Pátraic (d. 996), son of Donnchad
(d. 976), son of the above Cellach (d. 908). (See, for example, the
Osraige genealogical table in volume 9 of "A New History of Ireland".)
