Does anyone have any information on the Sanders family who was of
Charlwood, Surrey before 1481 and later of Lullington and Caldwell,
Derbyshire?

As you are probably aware William Sander, of Charlwood died 10 Aug 1481 and was
buried at Charlwood Church. His wife, Joan Carew, died in 1470 and was also
buried there. She filed suit against the trustees of her grandfather Sir
Nicholas Carew's estate to oblige them to surrender the manor of Carewses to
which she was entitles. This lands were surrendered to her in 1451.

William Sander was the son of Thomas Sander whose name and that of his wife
Johanna are inscribed in the porch at Charlwood Church. He and his son William
had a land grant in 1446.

Thomas Sander was the son of Stephen Sander of Charlwood who in 1388 was called
upon to answer a plea of trespass.

Visitations carry the family line on back a few more years. The foregoing from
VCH, Surrey, 3: 185 (for the manor of Sanders Place), MGH, Series 5, Vol. 8, p.
109-110. See also Michael Walker's article, "The Manor of Batailles and the
Family of Saunder in Ewell During the 16th and 17th Centuries," in Surrey
Archaeological Collections (1956, p. 76-100).

I have about 30 wills of this family from 1518 to the mid-17th - that my
grandfather collected around the turn of this century.

Michael Walker's article certainly makes the best sense of these wills,
far better than the Leo Culleton that my grandfather employed.

I have also just discovered in "The Family of Twysden and Twisden", by
John Twisden in 1939, a reference to a pedigree of the Saunders family
by William Twysden, 3rd Bt, which he, Wm, said was "taken out of a Book
in ye custody of Sr Edward Bysshe Knt Clarenceux King of Arms in 1679"
and signed for veracity by Willm Dugdale, garter. John Twisden goes
onto say that the original was then (1939) at Bradbourne and that it was
described in a paper in "Miscellanea Genealogica et Heraldica, fifth
series, vol VIII, part IV, Dec 1932, p 114.

It looks as if Bradbourne was another Twisden property in East Malling,
Kent. I've no idea what might have happened to this manuscript since
1939.
