First, who are the parents of Eva de Grey, wife of Walter Beke of Eresby?
CP Vol. II, sub Beke, identifies Eva as the niece of Walter de Grey,
Archbishop of York. CP Vol. VI, sub Grey, provides a pedigree chart of Grey
in which Walter, Archbishop of York, is identified as the son of Hawise.
The chart suggests he is of the Grey family of Rotherfield and indicates he
acquired Rotherfield. Further, the chart shows only one sibling, Robert de
Grey, who acquired Rotherfield from his brother. The text under Grey of
Rotherfield seems to begin with Walter, the son of Robert identified above.
No reference is made to Eva, and no suggestion of additional siblings for
Walter, the Archbishop, is provided. It would seem that Eva was the
daughter of Robert de Grey of Rotherfield, brother of Archbishop Walter.
Yet she is only referred to as the niece of Walter. Can it be assumed that
Robert is the father of Eva? A check of the Archives did not immediately
suggest an answer. Is the mother known?
Second, and more trivial, I find the Bekes of Eresby written as Beke (i.e.,
CP) and as Bec (i.e., DD). Is there a common usage that suggests one or the
other spellings is the preferred one?
Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Walter de Grey, Archbishop of York, is known to have had two sisters as well
as his brother Robert. They were Eve, wife of of William Brito (le Breton),
and Agnes, wife of [Wakelin?] D'Oilly, whose names are given in a charter in
J. Raine (ed), The Register of Walter Gray, Archbishop of York, 1215-1255
(Surtees Society Publication v.56), p. 227. The Archbishop had been granted
the wardship of William Duston's daughters and coheirs, and married two of
them to his nephews - Walter de Grey, married to Isabel, and John d'Oyley
married to Rose, while Mauger de Vavasour married Joan, the youngest
daughter [CIPM I no. 760]).
Unfortunately I'm not able to say which family Eve, wife of Walter Beke came
from.
Cheers
