I'm seeking answers to two questions.

First, who are the parents of Eva de Grey, wife of Walter Beke of Eresby?
CP Vol. II, sub Beke, identifies Eva as the niece of Walter de Grey,
Archbishop of York. CP Vol. VI, sub Grey, provides a pedigree chart of Grey
in which Walter, Archbishop of York, is identified as the son of Hawise.
The chart suggests he is of the Grey family of Rotherfield and indicates he
acquired Rotherfield. Further, the chart shows only one sibling, Robert de
Grey, who acquired Rotherfield from his brother. The text under Grey of
Rotherfield seems to begin with Walter, the son of Robert identified above.
No reference is made to Eva, and no suggestion of additional siblings for
Walter, the Archbishop, is provided. It would seem that Eva was the
daughter of Robert de Grey of Rotherfield, brother of Archbishop Walter.
Yet she is only referred to as the niece of Walter. Can it be assumed that
Robert is the father of Eva? A check of the Archives did not immediately
suggest an answer. Is the mother known?

Second, and more trivial, I find the Bekes of Eresby written as Beke (i.e.,
CP) and as Bec (i.e., DD). Is there a common usage that suggests one or the
other spellings is the preferred one?

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Dear Gordon

Walter de Grey, Archbishop of York, is known to have had two sisters as well
as his brother Robert. They were Eve, wife of of William Brito (le Breton),
and Agnes, wife of [Wakelin?] D'Oilly, whose names are given in a charter in
J. Raine (ed), The Register of Walter Gray, Archbishop of York, 1215-1255
(Surtees Society Publication v.56), p. 227. The Archbishop had been granted
the wardship of William Duston's daughters and coheirs, and married two of
them to his nephews - Walter de Grey, married to Isabel, and John d'Oyley
married to Rose, while Mauger de Vavasour married Joan, the youngest
daughter [CIPM I no. 760]).

Unfortunately I'm not able to say which family Eve, wife of Walter Beke came
from.

Cheers

Rosie

That Walter Beke was grandfather of the Walter Beke husband of Eve, niece of the Archbishop.

The Pipe Roll of Mich 1222 relates the handing over by Henry Beke to Walter his son of the manors of Eresby, and other lands after the death of Alice, Henry's wife. Walter had done homage for these lands to the chief lord, the bishop of Durham and has been allowed to take to wife Eve, the niece of the archbishop of York, whom he had dowered with a third part of all his lands.
[Pipe. R 6 Hen III, p.214-215].

Best wishes
Rosie

Dear Paula,

Walter Beke (not de Beke) who died after 1186, married Agnes, daughter and heiress of Hugh son of Pinceon who in 1166 was holding seven knight's fees of the Bishop of Durham in Lincolnshire (including Eresby).

Walter and Agnes had five sons; Hugh, Henry, Walter, John and Nicholas, and two daughters, Emmeline and Margaret.

Hugh apparently died childless before 1197 and Walter was succeeded by his second son Henry. Henry Beke married Alice de Multon, daughter of Thomas de Multon. Henry died before February 1223 and was succeeded by his son Walter Beke.

Walter Beke married, about 1222, Eve, probably the daughter of Robert de Grey of Rotherfield, Oxfordshire, brother of Walter de Grey, Archbishop of York.

Regards,

John
