Since I posted below I have found earlier dates on my PETER STANLEY and his first wife ELIZABETH SCARISBRICK daughter of JAMES SCARSBRICK. I descend from PETER STANLEY and second wife, CICELEY TARLETON.

The Victoria History of of the county of Lancaster.

I am finding a RICHARD de SUTTON in 1381 with ROGER de BRADSHAGH . They are connected with SIR HENRY de SCARISBRICK .. this leads into ALICE marrying WILLIAM MAINWARING. Later in 1555/6 WILLIAM BRADSHAGH transferred Aughton meadow to my PETER STANLEY of Bickerstaffe.

There is also a ROGER SUTTON and GILBERT SUTTON that goes into the family of WILLIAM GORSUCH. THOMAS GORSUCH held lands in Prescot I wonder if this hooks u with the SUTTON records below of ROBERT SUTTON that has records in St. Peter and St. Paul's church in Ormskirk. ?. Some of this appears to go into the STANLEY's of CROSS HALL also.

I am wondering if this SUTTON line is my EDWARD SUTTON that married ANNE STANLEY, daughter of PETER STANLEY and second wife CICELY TARLETON but who was married to ELIZABETH SCARSBRICK first. Thus Moor Hall and his other lands.

"The family acquired lands in North Meols, Lathom, and Huyton, about this time. GILBERT de GORSUCH succeeded about 1347; (fn. 126) he is described as 'son of Adam son of Walter.' Gilbert had no son, and settled estates in Longton upon his younger daughter Maud, wife ofWilliam de Hurleton; the latter also had no son, and Gorsuch and other lands went to RICHARD de SUTTON,who had married the elder daughter Joan. (fn. 127) In 1390 Gilbert de Gorsuch had made a settlement or testament providing for the succession to a portion of hislands; (fn. 128) and other deeds preserved by Kuerden showthat the main portion was settled on RICHARD de SUTTON and JOAN his wife, with the remainder toWilliam de Hurleton and Maud his wife. (fn. 129) "

"For more than a century the Suttons (fn. 130) remained in possession, and then the estate returned to the Gorsuch family, for in 1515 a marriage was arranged between MARGARET daughter of ROGER SUTTON (son of John, the son of Gilbert) and Thomas son and heir of William Gorsuch. (fn. 131) GILBERT SUTTON died on 20 April, 1518, and the inquisition taken after his death shows a considerable estate, the heir being his infant great-granddaughter, already espoused to THOMAS GORSUCH (fn. 132) Thomas Gorsuch was succeeded about 1560 (fn. 133) by his son JAMES, who in 1577secured from EDWARD SCARISBRICK a right of way from Gorsuch to Carr Cross in Snape, to Snape Green, thence to Wood moss,

PETER STANLEY was the founder of the STANLEYS of MOOR HALL near Aughton in Lancashire, England.

" Praye ye the good estate of PETER STANLEY SEQIR and CECELY his wif with their children who caused this work to be made in the yere of our Lord God a thousand CCCCCVI.
So runs the inscription over the doorway on the south front Moor Hall, the most interesting and historical residence that we possess in Aughton."

PETER STANLEY was the founder of the STANLEYS of MOOR HALL near Aughton in Lancashire, England. He was the second son of SIR WILLIAM STANLEY, KNT. of HOOTON in the Wirral of Cheshire. by ANN HARRINGTON. On 26 May 1528 his father granted him lands at Little Stourton and Great Stourton in Cheshire. He married ELIZABETH, the daughter of JAMES SCARISBRICK, by MARGARET, the only daughter of THOMAS ATHERSTONE of Bickerstaffe, aand after his marriage he acquired MOOR HALL and its lands in 1533, when the reversion was conveyed to him by WILLIAM BRADSHAUGH. He had a daughter MARGARET by his first marriage who married HENRY STANLEY 26 Sep 1653., son of SIR JAMES STANLEY of Cross Hall.l. ELIZABETH died in 1557 and was buried at Ormskirk.

On 21 April 1559, PETER married secondly to CECILY, daughter of RICHARD TARLETON of Walton. (this researcher's grandparents.) Over the doorway of the present MOOR HALL, there is an inscription, asking for prayers for PETER STANLEY and CECILY his wife, who caused the work to be made.

" He was Standard Bearer at the funeral of EDWARD, Third Earl of Derby, who had bequeathed his body to be buried in the Parish Church of Ormskirk, and a Chapel to be erected. The obsequies took place on the 4th December, 1572, and were accompanied with the most lavish expense and magnificence. PETER STANLEY was fourth in the order of procession, and is described as " An Esquire bearing the Standard, with his hood on his Head," and Horse trapped to the Ground, garnished, with a Shaffron" Escutcheons of Buckram Metal, on each side two "PETER STANLEY."

At the Reformation , he adhered to the Old Faith, and during the years of prosecution, he gave shelter to Catholic priests, who continued to say Mas in the private chapel of MOOR HALL. PETER was required in 1584 to provide a light horseman accountered at his expense for the Queen's service in Ireland (or pay a fine of L20)

" His will was proved 7th August , 1592 (published in Chetham Socy.'s vol 51),t." PETER died and was buried 24 july 1592 at Ormskirk, styled óf Bickerstaffe.'He held seven messauges, lands and meadows at Bickerstaffe, Aughton, Ormskirk and Skelmersdale, also lands at Netherton and Rainford, and a house and land in Upletherland óf the Queen by the yearly rent of 6 pence.'

CICELY died before him in 1658 and was buried 28 Nov at Ormskirk.

9th James L, 1611. Hil., No. 5. Sir RANDALL MAINWARING, THOS. JOLLY versus WM. SUTTON, THOS. SUTTON. Manor of Rushton James by Commission, Cheshire. 117 (Stafford). Meets and bounds. The manor of Bugtawton (Chester), and the lordships of Clowdwood and Rushton Spencer (Stafford). A waste or moor called the Clowde, in the manor of Bugtawton. Meets and bounds. I googled and found the present owner of the Cloud House and this is what the owner gave as its history.

The site of Cloud House north-west of Woodhouse Green was probably occupied in 1451 by WILLIAM SUTTON of the Cloud; the Sutton family certainly owned the house in 1596. (fn. 34) The present house is dated 1612 and has a small 18th-century extension on the north. Raven's Clough to the east was so called by 1596. (fn. 35) North of Cloud House there was evidently a settlement at Lymford in 1333, when there was mention of Henry of Lymford. (fn. 36) Lymford House, recorded in1596, (fn. 37) possibly stood on the site of the present Lymford Farm, which is of the 18th century. Bythe later 18th century there were houses at Toftgreen at the road junction north-west of Cloud House, and also a settlement called Cloud Sideon the east side of the Cloud. (fn. 38)

. Since the late 1500s the lordship of the manor of Rushton Spencer had been divided into five moieties. Since EDWARD SUTTON is described as a gentleman from Rushton Spencer it appears likely that he held one of these subdivisions. In 22 James I WILLIAM SUTTON the elder, gent., JANE his wife, and WILLIAM SUTTON the younger, gent. remitted for L320 to PHILIP OLDFIELD, RALPH EARDLEY, and FRA NCIS GIBSON 1 messuage, 2 cottages, 3 gardens, 60 acres land, 40 acres meadow, 60 acres pasture, 40 acres wood, common pasture for all cattle, common turbary of Cloudwood and Rushton Spencer, all tithes, oblations, obventions, and mortuaries in Cloudwood and Rushton Spencer, and one fifth part of the manor of Rushton Spencer with appurtenances [Collections For A History of Staffordshire Edited By The William Salt Archaeological Society (London, 1907), v. 10, New Series, Part I, pp. 66]
