I'm seeking information on the Alsop family of Alsop, co. Derby and
Markfield, co. Leicester. The 1619 Visitation of Leicester (H.S.P.,
vol. 2, pg. 105) shows the following family:

1. HUMPHREY ALSOP, of Alsop, co. Derby

2. WILLIAM ALSOP, of Alsop, co. Derby, [born say 1534]. He married
Isabel, daughter of John Warner of Markfield, co. Leicester. They had
five sons:

i. HUMPHREY ALSOP
ii. JOHN ALSOP [born say 1567]
iii. CHARLES ALSOP
iv. WILLIAM ALSOP
v. GEORGE ALSOP

I suspect John Alsop, 2nd son, of William Alsop above to be the same
individual who served subsequently a clerk at Crewkerne, Somerset and
whose daughter, Elizabeth Alsop, came to New England and married Bryan
Rossiter of Mass. and Conn.

I'm also trying to determine if Humphrey Alsop who heads the pedigree
above might be connected with a Richard Alsop living say 1515 whose
wife was a daughter of Humphrey Peshale, Esq., of Staffordshire. If
so, then the Alsop family would have royal ancestry through Humphrey
Peshale's Holand ancestry. As best I can determine, Humphrey Alsop
would fit chronologically to be a grandson of Humphrey Peshale and
perhaps named for him. If these families are connected, then the Alsop
family delineated above would have royal ancestry through the Holand
family in back of Humphrey Peshale.

Lastly, I'd appreciate having any information on the family of Isabel
Warner, wife of William Alsop above.

All for now. Best always, Douglas Richardson

Dear Newsgroup ~

As a followup to my original post on the Alsop family back in 1999, this past week I came across the following record:

Calendar of Patent Rolls, 42 Elizabeth I (1599-1600) (List and Index Society 332) (2010): 184:

Date: 1 August 1600. Presentation of John Alsopp, clerk, B.A., to the vicarage of East Chinnock [Somerset], Bath and Wells diocese; lawfully void, and in the queen's gift pleno jure). END OF QUOTE.

The above individual is presumably the John Alsop who matriculated sizar at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, at Easter 1578, and graduated B.A. 1580-1. He is believed to be the individual of that name who was ordained priest at Lichfield on 21 Sept. 1582. He subsequently served as a preacher in the parish of Crewkerne, Somersetshire in the period, 1607-1614.

Rev. John Alsop's daughter, Elizabeth Alsop, was baptized at Crewkerne, Somerset in 1614. She married [Mr.] Bray (or Bryan) Rossiter, Gent. (died 1672), of Dorchester, Massachusetts and Windsor and Guilford, Connecticut.

For an interesting biography of Bray Rossiter, see Paine, Paine Ancestry (1912): 113-118, available at the following weblink:

Hi Douglas,

My name is Sean Hale and I was wondering if you ever found anything more about Humphrey Alsop's ancestry? I descend from this line and am eager to find out anything more you may know about the matter. Thanks
