Does anyone have the ancestry of Alice Tunstall daughter of Sir Thomas
Tunstall of Thurmond Castle ca. 1460 who married Sir Thomas Parre?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
MichaelAnne Guido

I haven't submitted a monster for some time. This will be in
sections. I hope those who do not find anything of interest in this will
be forgiving.

Some of the data I've recently transcribed from the LDS Ancestral

errors. Anyhow I will be pleased if anyone would take the time to review
this and post corrections as needed.

I think there may be a problem with your hypothetical dates. I think it is likely
impossible that Adam de Banastre/Bannister could have been born circa 1298, died
in 1314 and have had a daughter in this time. AR7 as you show gives the death date
of 1314, but I have a much earlier guessed date of birth. His wife Margaret de
Holand, may be the daughter of Robert de Holand of Upholland, Lancs. (d. bef.
1304) and his wife Elizabeth de Samlesbury (d. aft. 1311) of Samlesbury, Lancs.
If so, it is likely her birthdate would also be somewhat earlier.

Perhaps someone else has better documented dates and confirmation of Margaret's
parentage for both of us.

I also show Adam being beheaded in 1314. Adam & Margaret's daughter
Katherine m. John Harington of Farleton, co. Lancashire [d. 1359]. They had

I would rather avoid a point by point critique - too much cutting and
pasting, but I do have a few comments.

The ancestry of Crinan is not known. While some predicessors in his
role as Lay Abbott probably represent relatives, that they represent his
immediate forebearers is less certain. Certainly, there is no Earl of
Strathclyde at the time claimed.

As far as i know, there is no contemporary source for the father of St.
Aelfgifu. As to the name you give, Wynflaed, the -flaed ending is more
typical of a female name. Still Hart is a good researcher, and might
have found something of value.

The early generations of the Counts of Rennes (later Counts of Brittany)
have been significantly revised in recent year by the work of
Keats-Rohan and Guillotel. In particular see K-R's article on the
ancestry of Rollo's wife Poppa. She suggests that Count Juhel Berenger
of Rennes was son Berenger, Count of Rennes, who was not the Count of
Bayeux, but instead the maternal grandson of his Bayeux namesake, who
was also father of Poppa. Presumably any connection with the breton
royalty would come through his father.

Obviously, the ancestry of Rollo is problematic. It has recently been
argued that, not only does Rognevald not belong on top of Rollo's
pedigree, but that he doesn't belong among the Orkney Jarls either,
being nothing more than a misplaced reflection of a viking in the
Flanders area.

Here I'm guilty (as is my wont) of simply transcribing--in this case
from ES ii, 89.

Actually Cyril Hart in Table 3.4, p. 128, shows Eadmund m., firstly,
ca 940, Aelfgifu, dau. of Wynflaed, d. 943/4. This leaves open the
possibility that Wynflaed is either Aelfgifu's father or mother. While I
photocopied the charts, I do not have the text available at home to see
whether this is clarified, and on what evidence Hart relied.

I had read Keats-Rohan's article on Poppa (see my reference #436). I
did not get the impression that she was as firm in her suggestions as you
construe her to be. She labeled her two alternative descents as
hypotheses; I did not see any sure affirmation of either in the text. Of
course you may have other sources. (I'm sure you have more skill at
reading between the lines.)
I think you may have inserted an extra generation into the sequence
of Berengars. If you accept the common elements of K-R's alternatives we
have:

Berengar, marquis of Neustria, d. 896
|
---------------------------
| |
Poppa = Rollo [Judith]
|
Berengar, count of Rennes, fl. 930-50

On p. 202 K-R says "The mother of Berengar of Rennes may have been
named Judith; the name was borne by her great-great-granddaughter, wife of
Richard II of Normandy." Now Judith, wife of Richard II, was sister of
Geoffrey, duke of Brittany, #25408 in my ancestral list. We have:

Juhel Berengar, count of Rennes
fl. 931, d. ca 970, #50816
|
Conan I "le Tort", #50816
|
----------------------------
| |
Geoffrey, #25408 Judith = Richard II

So for Judith to be great-great-granddaughter of the hypothetical
Judith, Juhel Berengar must be the Berengar, fl. 930-950, discussed by
K-R--not his son.

I had looked into some things on the Bretagne/Rennes ancestry. What I had
found from other works did not quite match what was in Katharine's article on
Poppa. When I queried her about this some time ago, she had to conclude that
we have to wait until forthcoming work by Guillotel is published. The ancestry
of Juhel Berengar is still very problematic.

In my account I perhaps confused what appeared in the Poppa article with
what was from it's source (neither of which I have read in over a
year). Keats-Rohan's reconstruction relied heavily on Guillotel, who as
far as I can tell, first suggested the dual Berengers. Lot wrote an
article some time ago (~100 years +/- 25) which traced the line of Conan
back to Juhel Berenger, son of Berenger, who he suggested was the Count
of Bayeux, father of Poppa. Thus, it was with a little bit of surprise
that I read Guillotel's brief statements in the history of Brittany that
he co-wrote. There he indicated that the Count of Bayeux left two
daughters, one of whom married Rollo, and the other a Breton noble,
perhaps of the family of Erispoe, and was mother of the Berenger, Count
of Rennes father of Juhel Berenger. These relations were only mentioned
in passing narative (as is appropriate for a general history) and the
basis for the conclusions were not explained in detail. Keats-Rohan
appears to have adopted Guillotels when preparing her work, the primary
focus of which was this ancestry. Guillotel has produced much good work
(I am told, but I have failed to get my hands on any of it other than
this one book) and so we can look forward to his detailed evaluation of
the question.

Not by my count:

[Judith]

Berenger son

Juhel Berenger grandson

Conan great-grandson

Judith great-great-granddaughter

That being said, see my other note. As to [Judith], I am not
comfortable with the assignment of this name given the number of
intervening generations.

He had four daughters, not just Katherine. He was also a knight so he
must have been somewhat mature.
