I missed this when it was originally posted a couple of days ago, but
MichaelAnne Guido sent me the details today off-list, pointing out that the
Complete Peerage identifies this Margery Peche as the widow Margery who
survived Nicholas Criol, and also mentioning that Hugh Clifford's "The House
of Clifford" explains the quitclaim by Richard Clifford in 1313 by asserting
that Richard's father John had married Margaret [or Margery] Hereward and
had by her, as well as Richard, two daughters, Isabella, who married Robert
FitzPain, and Margery, who married Nicholas de Carrol.
Some time ago I made some notes on Elizabeth, the wife of John de Pabenham,
mainly from the Victoria County History's account of Lillingstone Lovell
[VCH Buckinghamshire vol.3, p.41] and also from VCH Bedfordshire, vol.3,
pp.41,50,57. The notes need to be supplemented by more from original
sources, but I think they clarify the identity of this Margery, widow of
Nicholas Criol.
The VCH account says that Margery Criol (Keriel), Elizabeth wife of John
Pabenham, and Margery the daughter and heir of Robert and Margaret Hereward,
appear to have been the heirs of one Margery Clifford, who in 1254 held the
manor of Lillingston Lovell under Sir Hugh de Chaceporc, and married first
Peter de St Martin, and then by 1260 Peter Dansey [=Dauntsey?], the manor
being settled on them and their issue, with remainder to Margery's right
heirs in that year. The manor was held under the condition of giving a
"clove gillyflower" at Easter to Richard Clifford and his heirs (presumably
the Richard Clifford of 1313 was one of these heirs). Peter was still living
in 1266, and Margery in 1284.
Chronologically, Margery the widow of Nicholas Criol would fit as a daughter
of Margery Clifford by Peter Dansey (Nicholas being a minor in 1272).
Elizabeth the wife of John Pabenham would also fit more comfortably as a
sister of Margery than a daughter - if my notes are correct, John the son of
John Pabenham was married by 1295 (though looking at them it's not
absolutely clear he was Elizabeth's son). In this case, Margaret the wife of
Robert Hereward would probably be the third sister.
I suppose there is the possibility that Margery Clifford died without issue,
and that Margery, Elizabeth and Margaret were her right heirs rather than
her daughters. Even so, it's difficult to see how Margery could be a
daughter of Gilbert Pecche, who according to the Complete Peerage [vol.10,
p.336] had sons by both marriages. So it seems that Nicholas Criol must have
married twice, first to Margery Pecche, and second to Margery the coheir of
Margery Clifford.
Two more points:
(1) According to the VCH account, Lillingstone Lovell had been held by a
William Clifford as early as 1131. Therefore it seems that Hugh Clifford, in
"The House of Clifford" is not only wrong in its detailed reconstruction,
but in attaching these Cliffords to the Frampton-of-Severn family, has
picked the wrong family altogether, because he says that the first of the
Frampton family to assume the name Clifford was Walter (1127-1187).
(2) The VCH account identifies Margery, the daughter of Robert Hereward and
Margaret, with the later wife of William Lovell. It says that Margery Criol
was holding a moiety of Lillingstone [Lovell] as late as 1361 [if so,
suggesting she may have been much younger than her husband], but apparently
the Criol portion was later merged with the others, perhaps implying that
Margery Criol left no heirs. (I should like to check this point further,
though.)

I appear to have Walter/William de Clifford of Clifford Castle,
Herefordshire as being born around 1113. He married Isabel de Tosny, and
amongst their children was a Richard de Clifford (b. Abt 1151) who married
Letitia de Berkeley. Their descendants became the Frampton side of the
family. Indeed Walter/William was the first to assume the Clifford name,
although he was not strictly a Frampton on Severn man himself, just his son.
As William married into the Tosny family (who several generations previous
were related to Earl William Fitz Osbern through marriage), could the
Clifford family of Hereford have come by the land of Lillingstone Lovell via
the Tosny family, through Isabel? i.e. Could the first William de Clifford
in Lillingstone actually be the same as the Walter/William in Clifford
Castle? I suppose he might have been a little young!!!
Just a thought/guess. I've nothing to back this up though :-)
(OT: The name Clifford came from the site of the castle in Herefordshire -
it was built at the top of a cliff directly above a ford across the River
Wye.)

The 1613 Visitation of Huntingdonshire shows the following complex
arrangement. The confusion about the two Margerys appears to have come about
through an uncle and nephew, both named Nicholas Kryell being married to a
Margery. Also as sometimes encountered in medieval families, there were two
siblings with the same name - brothers Nicholas in the second generation.
The only error in the pedigree that I am aware of is that Katherine Pabenham
was married to William Cheyne first and Thomas Aylesbury second, not the
other way around. Hence Lawrence Cheyne being her heir.

D'Ewes (Sir Simond) in a manuscript of 1626 reportedly listed no
fewer than 14 early generations of a family of Pecche who were to
become widely known to us as one called Clopton. I'd be interested
to know whether anyone has seen a reasonably reliable (or at least
relatively modern) account of this connection?
Thanks,
Cris

Many thanks for posting that pedigree.
But it does look as though it should be treated with some caution, judging
by the crucial generation:

Joan married first Walter de Patteshull and second William Baud, and left
issue by both husbands - although her son by Baud died s.p. Agnes married
Thomas, not Michael, Poynings, and her son Michael left issue.
More seriously, Joan and Agnes were not daughters of a Nicholas de Criol,
but of Richard de Rokesle, by his wife Joan. The latter Joan - not Joan and
Agnes - was the sister of a Bertram Criol, father of John, who apparently
died sp (or at any rate it seems John's issue was extinct by the death of
his widow Eleanor in 1348/9). Secondary sources say that Bertram and the
elder Joan were children of another Bertram, not a Nicholas (I haven't seen
the primary sources to prove that).
So it looks as though this part of the pedigree at least is very badly
garbled.
Also, I should have thought the quitclaim by Richard Clifford reads more
naturally if Margery, Elizabeth and Margaret are coheirs - the Victoria
County History's interpretation - rather than Elizabeth and Margaret being
daughters of Margery, as in the pedigree.
If Margery were the same who held Lillingstone [Lovell] in 1254, and was
married to Peter Dansey who was living 1266, she would presumably have
married Nicholas de Criol later than that. But it looks chronologically
difficult for Elizabeth Pabenham to be born later than 1266 if she was the
mother of John Pabenham who was married by 1295 (though I'm not sure she
was). And it would clearly be impossible for Margery the wife of Peter
Dansey by 1260 to be the Margery Criol who was holding part of the manor in
1361 according to VCH.
So the pedigree's arrangement doesn't seem to me to fit easily with the
contemporary evidence. However, maybe it is worth thinking more carefully
about whether there may be two Nicholas Criols available to be the husbands
of Margery Pecche and Margery [?Dansey]. VCH assumes they are the same man,
for what it's worth. From the chronology, it looks as though, if there were
two separate men, the husband of Margery Pecche would probably be the elder,
if anything.

I have pasted in my working reconstruction of the Criols from var. sources.
It is not documented and is only a working hypothese. They appear to have
intermarried with several families I am working on. I am, of course, still
looking for documentation.

Thanks for posting that reconstruction.
I think we can safely say that there isn't a general consensus on how these
Criols should be put together!
Incidentally, Tony Ingham has also been kind enough to send me his
reconstruction of the Criols, according to which Bertram, the husband of
Eleanor de Crevacoeur (and father of John, Bertram and Joan the wife of
Richard de Rokesle), and Nicholas, the husband of Joan d'Auberville (and
father of Nicholas the husband of Margery Pecche) are brothers - the sons of
John de Criol and Maud de Eastwell.
On the whole, I think more work is needed before we can be sure whether we
have two contemporary couples called Nicholas de Criol and Margery, or one
man who married two Margerys.

For what its worth, I have the following extract from Hasted's History of
Kent (but do not seem to have made a note of the name of the manor involved):
After which this manor appears to have come into the possession
of the family of Auberville, in which it remained till Joane, daughter
and heir of William de Auberville, marrying Nicholas de Criol,
entitled him to it as part of her inheritance. At length his
descendant Bertram de Criol dying s.p. Joane his sister carried it in
marriage to Sir Richard de Rokesle, whose daughter and coheir Joane,
about the middle of king Edward II,'s reign, marrying Thomas de
Poynings, of Westhanger, on whose death in the 14th year of king
Henry VIII. without legitimate issue, and even without any collateral
kindred, who could make claim to his estates, this manor, among the
rest of them, escheated to the crown, whence it was by the king's
bounty, soon afterwards conferred on his eldest natural son Sir Thomas
Poynings, created Baron Poynings, of Ostenhanger. But in the 32d year
of it, he, with Catherine his wife, exchanged this manor, with
Westenhanger, and other premises, with the king, for other estates in
other counties. After which this manor continued, in the same owners
as Westenhanger, down to the family of Champneis, in which is now
vested, ....... (vol viii p 289)

(1) The Victoria County History of Northamptonshire, under Irchester (vol.4,
p.21) has more on the Cliffords. The manor was settled, around 1275, by
Richard of Irchester on William de Clifford (rector of Irchester from 1268
and later bishop of Emly) and his brother Richard. In 1284 William held a
quarter of a knight's fee there, which he and his brother Richard
transferred to Thomas de Morton five years later, "possibly in trust for
Margery, wife of Sir Nicholas de Crioll", who was tenant in 1298 and 1316.
(I have seen the 1298 reference, and she is described simply as Margery de
Keryel, holding in Irchester and Farndish.)
The account then goes on to mention the surrender in 1313 by Richard, son
and heir of Sir John de Clifford, of his right to the three coheirs, which
we have already seen. The description of the coheirs is a little fuller than
the other accounts, though. It says Margery Criol was a widow (presumably
described as widow of Sir Nicholas de Crioll), and calls the others
Elizabeth, wife of Sir John Pabenham the elder and Margery Hereward,
daughter and heir of Margaret, late the wife of Sir Robert Hereward.
Elizabeth de Pabenham successfully sued Sir William Lovel and his wife
Margery [identified by VCH Bucks as probably Margery Hereward] for a moiety
of the manor of Irchester in 1342, and (apparently, though it's not entirely
clear from the account), the whole seems to have passed to the Pabenhams in
this way.

(2) Tony Ingham kindly sent me some details on the Criols from "The Knights
of Edward I", and also information that the manor of Benhall in Suffolk came
originally from the d'Aubervilles. From information supplied by MichaelAnne
Guido, this manor was settled by Nicholas's father on him and Margery Pecche
at their marriage, and "and his said son, with the assent of his father
dowered Margery of the said manor, so that if he, the said son, should die
without heir begotten of the said Margery, or die under age, the whole manor
should remain to her in dower for her life" [Cal. Patent Rolls 1266-1272,
p.623].
However, Nicholas de Criol in 1290 granted the manor of Benhall to Guy
Ferre. I take this as an indication that Margery Pecche may well have been
dead by this time - as Nicholas could not be sure of dying without heirs -
unless some arrangement had been made to compensate her for her dower rights
which could eb lost as a result of this grant.
If Margery were dead by 1290, then the wife Margery who survived Nicholas at
his death in 1303 would presumably be Margery the coheir of Margery
Clifford.
(3) The Pabenham inquisitions post mortem recite several fines between
Elizabeth Pabenham and Margery de Criol. In the final one, dated 2 Edward II
[1308 or 1309], Margery is described as a widow. Unfortunately I didn't have
time to copy these, but the first two fines are dated 1303 and 1304 in the
VCH Bucks account. I'll have to go back and check the dates, but it would
make sense if these transactions represented a tidying up of the 3 coheirs'
inheritance following the death of Margery Criol's husband in 1303.
(4) The evidence above generally seems consistent with Nicholas (d.1303)
having married both Margerys.
The fly in the ointment is a quitclaim by Margery de Kyriel to Geoffrey de
Braddene and Katherine his wife of the manor of Easton Neston,
Northamptonshire, dated 1301 [British Library Add. Ch. 21856]. Baker's
History of Northamptonshire [vol.2, p.139] mentions this, and says that
Geoffrey had earlier, in 1300, enfeoffed "lady Margaret widow of sir
Nicholas de Criol" [citing Madox, "Formulare Anglicanum", p.90].
If that description is correct, it must imply a different Sir Nicholas from
the one who died in 1303. What's particularly puzzling, though, and suggests
this may be an error, is that (a) the first witness of the 1301 charter is
Sir Simon Pecche (b) another, undated, charter apparently by the same woman
(she uses a similar seal) concerns land in Hinton [Cherry Hinton,
Cambridgeshire]; this ties in with another charter of Nicholas de Criolis of
a tenement in Hinton [British Library Harl. Ch. 49 A 5]. This is immediately
followed in the collection of Harleian charters by the one by which Nicholas
grants Benhall to Guy Ferre [49 A 6] - and that Nicholas is obviously the
husband of Margery Pecche.
Clearly some more research is needed to disentangle this problem.
Chris Phillips
I really don't understand what went wrong.
Sorry again!
Chris Phillips
That's yet another Criol puzzle, as none of the various reconstructions of
the Criols that we've seen make Joan the wife of Richard de Rokesle a
descendant of the d'Aubervilles.
Chris Phillips
I don't know if Hasted is correct but her repeats the d'Aubervilles
connection in the following extract:
The manor of Walmer [Walmer parish, Kent] was antiently part of
the possessions of the eminent family of Auberville, who held it by
knight's service, of Hamo de Crevequer, as of the manor of Folkestone.
At length, Sir William de Auberville, of Westenhanger, left an only
daughter and heir Joane, who marrying Nicholas de Criol, brought him
this estate as part of her inheritance.
The Criols, or Keriels, bore for their arms, Argent, two
chevrons, and a canton, gules; in imitation of their superior lords,
the Clares, earls of Gloucester, who bore Or, three chevrons, gules.
{fn See an account of these sort of bearings of coats of arms, in vol.
v. of this history, p. 297.} From him this manor devolved at length by
succession to Sir Thomas Keriell, for so their name was at that time
in general spelt, who was slain at the second battle of St. Alban's in
the 38th year of king Henry VI. in asserting the cause of the house of
York. He left two daughters his coheirs, of whom Alice the youngest,
married John Fogge , esq. of Repton, afterwards, this manor was
allotted to him, and he by will devised it to his son Sir Thomas
Fogge, sergeant-porter of Calais, both under king Henry VII. and VIII.
whose daughter and coheir Anne entitled her second husband Henry
Isham, esq. to the possession of it; but his son Edmund Isham leaving
an only daughter and heir Mary, she carried it in marriage to Sir
George Perkins, whose daughter Mary married Sir Richard Minshall, of
Cheshire, afterwards created by king Charles I in his 18th year, Baron
Minshull, of Minshull, .... (084 vol x pp 25-6)

I've just noticed that the account of Criol in the Complete Peerage
describes Nicholas de Criol, the father of Nicholas (d.1303) as of Cherry
Hinton, Cambridgeshire.
So the Margery de Criol connected with Cherry Hinton must have been the
widow of the Nicholas de Criol who died 1303. (Although in the Criol
charters, it is described only as Hinton, with no county specified, the
charter of Nicholas de Cryel is witnessed by a "Robert of the manor of
Theuersam", and Teversham is less than 2 miles from Cherry Hinton. Alan de
"Coulinge" is the grantee of this charter, and Alan "Culling" is the first
witness of Margery de Criol's Hinton charter.)
Given the similarity of the seals attached to the Cherry Hinton and Easton
Neston charters (one seal is incomplete), both appear to be grants by the
same Margery de Criol. So it seems Baker must be wrong in describing the
Margery de Criol connected with Easton Neston as a widow in 1300.
That would remove the one piece of evidence that points towards two separate
Nicholases having married two different Margerys. But it would be nice to
have an absolutely clear indication that it was the same Nicholas who
married both.
Chris Phillips
Mardi Carter has kindly sent me details of a pedigree from Beds Rec. Society
(vol.14, after p.132,
pedigree 2), which gives Nicholas de Criol (d.1273), the father of Nicholas
(d.1303), a second wife (after Joan d'Auberville) Margery, the mother of
Elizabeth Pabenham and Margaret Hereward. Margery is described as
"testatrix", which suggests this may be based on the evidence of a will.
On the same lines, Doug Smith has mentioned a GEDCOM at www.penrose.org,
based on Louis Sorley, "The Sorley Pedigrees", pp.39-45, which also has a
Margery Clifford marrying the elder Nicholas de Criol and having by him a
daughter who married John de Pabenham. We haven't been able to locate "The
Sorley Pedigrees" on online library catalogues.
Looking again at the Complete Peerage, it does refer to Joan d'Auberville as
Nicholas's _first_ wife, but doesn't say who his second wife was.
Chronologically, the Margery Clifford who appears in 1254, and who married
(i) Peter de St Martin and (ii)before 1260 Peter Dansey (living 1266), could
have married Nicholas de Criol (d.1273), and could have been the mother of
Elizabeth the wife of John Pabenham. This would explain why she occurs
simply as Margery de Criol in 1298. As the wife of the elder Sir Nicholas,
Margery could have been granted dower in Cherry Hinton, and could also have
figured in a transaction in 1300 as the widow, rather than the wife, of Sir
Nicholas (as Baker's History of Northamptonshire describes her).
However, we should have to assume that references to her in feudal surveys
as late as 1361 are anachronisms copied from earlier records.
More puzzling is the interpretation of the Victoria County Histories of
Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire, that Margery was a coheir with
Elizabeth Pabenham and Margery Hereward, not their mother. It's starting to
look as though that may be a mistaken interpretation after all.

Dear Doug,
In generation 6 Maud d'Avranches married Hamo II de Crevecoeur son of Robert
II de Crevecoeur. I would think that Hamo and Robert have to have been
descendants of Hamo Dentatus six or so generations earlier. Do you know the
connections?
Regards,
Bob

PART 1 OF 3
Finally it's possible to give a fairly definite answer to the question about
Margery de Criol, though some questions remain.
To recap briefly: the Complete Peerage (vol.3, p.542) says that Nicholas de
Criol married before 10 February 1271/2, Margery, daughter of Gilbert Peche,
and that he died 12 October 1303, with Margery surviving. However,
MichaelAnne Guido pointed out that an apparently different Margery, widow of
Nicholas de Criol appeared in 1313, when Richard Clifford, son and heir of
John Clifford released to her and to Elizabeth wife of Sir John de Pabenham,
and Margery daughter and heiress of Sir Robert de Hereward, all right in
specified lands of their inheritance [Baker, History of Northamptonshire,
vol.1, p.714].
The Victoria County Histories of Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire
interpreted this as a release of his right to three coheiresses, and
suggested that these three were coheirs of a Margery Clifford who appeared
holding the manor of Lillingstone [Lovell] in 1254, and who married (i)
Peter de St Martin and (ii) by 1260 Peter Dansey (who was living 1266).
However.other secondary sources show Margery de Criol as the mother of
Elizabeth
Pabenham and Margaret Hereward. But if Margery de Criol was the wife of
Nicholas who d.1303, chronology would place her in the same generation as
Elizabeth and Margaret, supporting the VCH interpretation.
This raised a number of questions - did Nicholas de Criol (d.1303) marry
twice; if so, who was his second wife, and which of his wives was the mother
of his son and heir?
(1) Mardi Carter pointed out a pedigree in Bedfordshire Historical Record
Society vol.14 (1931), which placed the "Clifford" Margery as the wife of
the father of Nicholas (d.1303), and made her the mother of Elizabeth
Pabenham and Margaret Hereward. Nicholas's father, also called Nicholas,
died 1273, having married Nicholas junior's mother, Joan d'Auberville (whom
the Complete Peerage calls his first wife). Margery was described in the
pedigree as "testatrix", suggesting this was based on evidence from a will.
I followed this up and found that this was an extract of Margery's will,
with a translation and commentary, in the article "Some Bedfordshire Wills
at Lambeth and Lincoln", by Mrs H. Jenkinson and G.H. Fowler. (The copy I
saw unfortunately lacked the pedigree that Mardi saw, which must have been
"lost, stolen or strayed".)
This will, dated 1319, is really the vital piece of evidence, as it
mentions:
Bertram my son (deceased);
my brother Richard de Clifford*;
my daughters Catherine de Braddene* and Margaret Hereward*;
[Sir] Robert Hereward*;
Sir John de Pabenham and my daughter Elizabeth his wife;
Margaret their daughter;
Elizabeth de Pabenham, a nun at Shaftesbury.
*Presumably dead, as provision is made for prayers for their souls.
So it establishes that, despite the VCH interpretation, Elizabeth Pabenham
and Margaret Hereward were Margery de Criol's daughters, not her coheirs.
[This will is mentioned in the Complete Peerage article on Criol, but as
that of the widow of the Nicholas who d.1303. As shown below, that is
incorrect.]
The mention of the daughter Catherine Braddene explains Margery's role in a
transaction concerning the manor and advowson of Easton Neston,
Northamptonshire, with Geoffrey de Braddene and Katherine his wife [British
Library, Additional Charter 21,856]. According to Baker's History of
Northamptonshire this manor had been in the Braddene family. Judging by his
pedigree of the Braddenes elsewhere, Geoffrey probably had no issue by
Katherine.
(2) In another Braddene transaction mentioned by Baker, dated 1300,
"Margaret" de Criol is described as the widow of Sir Nicholas de Criol.
Clearly if this is correct, she cannot be the widow of the Nicholas who died
in 1303.
With the help of the references given by Jenkinson and Fowler, several other
references tell the same story.
(a) Lands that belonged to Nicholas de Cryul in the hands of Gregory de
Rokesle, mayor of London, Isabella de Eynesford and Margery de Cryul by the
king's commission, 30 April 1277, 25 May 1278 [Calendar of Close Rolls
1272-79, pp.379, 456].
(b) Bertram de Kyriel obtained the manor of [Cherry] Hinton, Cambridgeshire,
by exchange with Peter of Savoy, and gave it to Nicholas his son and Joan
the daughter of William de Abrevile and their heirs; Nicholas begot of Joan
a son Nicholas, who is under age and in the custody of the king; Nicholas
enfeoffed Gilbert Peche after which Gilbert was enfeoffed of the said
Nicholas and Margery his wife, who now lives; Gilbert gave to the said
Nicholas and Margery for their lives by the fine levied between them, which
was done while the king that now is was in the holy land [8 Edward I
(1279/80); Hundred Rolls vol.2, p.432].
(c) Margery de Cryoyl who was the wife of Nicholas de Cryoyl held the manor
of Hinton (Cambridgeshire) 1284-6 [feudal Aids vol.1, p.135].
So it's clear that the Margery, widow of Nicholas de Criol, we are looking
at must have been the widow of the elder Nicholas de Criol (d.1273), not the
younger one (d.1303). This is the interpretation given by Jenkinson and
Fowler in Beds Hist Rec Soc.
As recited in the inquisition post mortem after the death of Elizabeth's son
Thomas de Pabenham [Cal. Inq. p.m. vol.8, no 598] and in an inquisition
after Elizabeth's death [Cal. Inq. Misc. vol.2], there had been several
fines in the first decade of the 14th century between Margery de Criol and
the Pabenhams, settling lands, with some specifying that the remainder was
to pass to Margery Hereward. Presumably it was because some of Margery de
Criol's inheritance had been settled on Elizabeth Pabenham and Margery
Hereward that all three were named in the release of 1313 by Richard de
Clifford.
A few more points:
(1) Presumably Margery's son Bertram, who predeceased her, was her son by
Nicholas de Criol, named after Nicholas's father. However, it's not clear
whether Nicholas or Margery's previous husband, Peter Dansey, was the father
of her daughters Elizabeth Pabenham, Margaret Hereward and Katherine
Braddene. If Elizabeth was the mother of John Pabenham junior (born around
1280), probably she would be the daughter of Peter Dansey, who was still
alive in 1266. However, it's not clear that Elizabeth _was_ the mother of
John Pabenham junior.
It may well be that the reference in the Hundred Rolls to Cherry Hinton
being settled on Nicholas and Margery by fine, while Edward I was in the
Holy Land, marks the time of their marriage. If so, that would place it soon
after Edward's departure for home [September 1272], and soon before
Nicholas's death [pre 2 July 1273]. If so, only Bertram would
have been Nicholas's son, and Margery's other children would have been by
Peter Dansey. (Presumably she had no issue by Peter de St Martin, as in 1260
Lillingstone was settled on Peter Dansey, Margery and their issue, with
remainder to Margery's right heirs.)
(2) As to Margery's parentage, her will names Richard Clifford as her
brother, and Richard is said to be the son and heir of John Clifford. The
VCH Northants account also names, as a brother of Richard, William Clifford,
rector of Irchester and later bishop of Emly.
Assuming Margery is the same woman who was holding Lillingstone in 1254 (as
"Domina Margeri de Clifford" - was she already the widow of her first
husband by then?), and as her daughters inherited that manor, which had
previously been in Clifford hands, presumably she was a full sister of
Richard Clifford, and thus the daughter of John Cliffard (although Jenkinson
and Fowler comment that her parentage has not been found, "but there are
indications that she may have been of the family de Grey" - perhaps these
lie in the parts of the will they omit, as not relating to Bedfordshire).
This would seem to fit with the account of the Cliffords given by the
Victoria County History of Gloucestershire (vol.10, p.144, Gloucestershire),
which has a John de Clifford being succeeded by his son Richard by 1294. (In
this case, the version of Margery de Criol's identity given by Hugh Clifford
in "The House of Clifford" - as daughter of John Clifford and sister of
Richard Clifford - would after all be nearly correct, except that he
identified Margery with her granddaughter Margery Hereward, and therefore
ended up marrying John Clifford to "Margaret Hereward".)
(3) Nicholas the husband of Joan d'Auberville is identified in the extract
from the Hundred Rolls, given above, as the son of a Bertram de Criol. We've
had several versions of the Criol pedigree posted recently, but I think none
of them places Nicholas as son of a Bertram. It will be interesting to see
whether that can be easily achieved or not.
Sorting this out - to the extent it has been sorted out - has been an
extremely
collaborative effort - many thanks for information provided by Rosie Bevan,
Mardi Carter, MichaelAnne Guido, Tony Ingham and Doug Smith.

No doubt she was connected to the following:
Testamenta Vetusta.

SIR NICHOLAS CRIELL, KNT.
Nicholas Criell {fn 1}, Knt. on the Friday {fn 2} before St. Michal's Day,
1379. To Elizabeth, my wife; to Elizabeth Echingham, xx marks. And I appoint
Sir William Echingham, Knt. Robert Echingham, and Thomas Brokhull, my
executors.
{fn 1} Sic in Harl. MSS. 6148; but most likely it should be Criol, and he was
probably the descendant of Nicholas Criol, who was summoned to Parliament the
55th Edward I. and left issue Nicholas Criol, his son, who was employed in
the Navy in the 18th Edward II. to prevent the landing of Queen Isabel and
her, son Prince Rdward. Dugdale, vol. i. p. 770.
