Dear Newsgroup ~
Complete Peerage 7 (1929): 476-477 (sub Latimer) has a good biography of Sir John Neville, Knt., 6th Lord Latimer (died 1430). On page 477, footnote b, it is stated that in 1418 he gave his estates to Ralph Neville and others, and on 20 Dec. 1427 the surviving trustees gave them to George Neville, son of his half-brother, Ralph Neville, late Earl of Westmorland, and his issue. By these two actions, Lord Latimer effectively disinherited his full sister, Elizabeth, wife of Sir Thomas Willoughby, Knt., and her son, Sir John Willoughby, Knt.
Regarding Lord Latimer's sister and her husband, Sir Thomas Willoughby, the following information is given on page 477, footnote i:
"This Sir Thomas [Willoughby] was 3rd son of Robert (Willoughby_), 1st Lord Willoughby, of Eresby, by his 2nd wife, Margaret, daughter of William, Lord Zouch (Visit. of Dorset, 1565, in Genealogist (N.S.), vol. iii, p. 178; Brydges, Collins, vol. vi, p. 691. In another place - Idem, p. 599, Thomas is said to be the son of the 1st wife, Alice Skipwith). He [Thomas] was Sheriff of co. Lincoln, 1403-04, a justice of the peace in the parts of Holland, and acted on various Lincolnshire commissions (Cals. Patent Rolls). He was also warden of the Guild of St. George, Boston. Admon. on the goods of Sir Thomas Wylughby, Kt., was granted 20 Aug. 1417, in the parish church of Boston, to Ralph Latoner, chaplain, and others (Lincoln Episc. Register, vol. xv, p. 196). His father gave him a cup (?) with the arms of Nevill and Latimer (Test. Vet., p. 136)." END OF QUOTE.
On page 478, footnote b further information is given regarding a bequest made by Sir Thomas Willoughby in his will to his surviving wife, Elizabeth Neville:
"Ch. Inq. p. m. 15 Henry VI, no. 3 (file 79). ... Elizabeth, wife of the said Thomas, was to have the bed embroidered with the arms of Latimer and Nevill, with all the 'costeres, lapettes and cusines' (Register of Archbishop Arundel, vol. i, fo. 157 d.)." END OF QUOTE.
No further information is given regarding Elizabeth Neville, except that she must have died sometime before 10 Dec. 1430 (date of her brother, John Neville, Lord Latimer's death), as her son, John Willoughby, was presented as Lord Latimer's heir in the inquisition post mortem following Lord Latimer's death in 1430. Complete Peerage cites the following source for Lord Latimer's inquisition post mortem: Ch. Inq. p.m. 9 Hen. VI, no. 24.
Recent research has turned up new evidence which proves that Elizabeth Neville married (2nd) before 1418 Roger Bate, Gentleman, of Frampton, Lincolnshire. The evidence is taken from lawsuits found in the Court of Common Pleas:
1. In 1418 Ralph Berton, Citizen and skinner of London, sued Roger Bate, Gent., of Frampton, Lincolnshire and his wife, Elizabeth, executrix of the will of Thomas Willoughby, Knt., of Lincolnshire, in the Court of Common Pleas regarding a debt of £8 17 s. 2. In 1422 Edmund Berry, Knt., and three others, executors of Edmund Thorpe, Knt., sued Roger Bate, Gent., of Frampton, Lincolnshire, and his wife Elizabeth, late wife and executrix of the will of Thomas Willoughby, Knt., of Lincolnshire in the Court of Common Pleas regarding a debt of £40. Following his marriage to Elizabeth Neville, Roger Bate, Gent., was appointed a collector of tax in the Holland district of Lincolnshire in 1419. He occurs in association with his step-son, John Willoughby, Knt., in a record dated 1429. He was living in 1430, and died sometime before 17 June 1436. His wife, Elizabeth, was living in 1422, and died as noted above sometime before 10 Dec. 1430.
I've copied below my file account of Elizabeth (Neville) (Willoughby) Bate, including one of her two descents from King Henry II of England. For further information on the ancestry and descendants of Elizabeth Neville, please see my book, Royal Ancestry [5 volume set], published in 2013.
