Does anyone
(1) know from where in the early Hamiltons this line originated?
(2) have any authoritative sources for parts or all of the tree
(3) have their own details on it (I'm thinking here of those who seem to
have trees on everything, like Utz, Ravilious, van de Pas .....)
I no longer believe that this lot played a part in my own Hamilton
background, but am curious nonetheless.
Regards, Graham

In the meantime, Dicitionary of Concise Irish Biography has:
Hugh Hamilton, 1st Baron of Glenawley, co Fermanagh, entered the Swedish
army, 1624, became general; naturalised Swedish noble 1648, and created
baron; at Restoration Charles II gave him an Irish peerage; settled at
Ballygawley, Co Tyrone; died there 1670.
and
Hugh Hamilton, soldier, born Ballygawley, Tyrone, nephew of foregoing,
saw much service in Swedish army from 1680; ennobled 1693; rose to
distinction in wars of Charles XII; becoming general; died 1724. The
present [viz. 1928[ Swedish Counts Hamilton are his direct descendants.
Now, the Barons Glenawly had died out by 1829 (no entry in Burke's
Peerage of Glenawly of that year). That is, no descendants.
Gustavus was quite a popular name in the Hamilton family, viz those of
the Viscounts Boyne.
The first Visc Boyne, was Gustavus Hamilton born abt 1640. Granted lands
for his services at the Battle of the Boyne.
He was son of James Hamilton, of Manor Hamilton, marr 1647, his cousin,
Catherine, dau of Claud Hamilton, Lord Strabane (see Dukes of Abercorn)
and died 1652.
James was son of Sir Frederick Hamilton of Manor Hamilton, Dromhere, co
Leitrim, youngest son of Claud, 1st Baron Paisley and brother of 1st
Earl of Abercorn, sho signalized himself in the armies of Gustavus
Adolphus, King of Sweden, and was afterwards made Governor of Ulster.
Frederick had issue other than his sons, James (see above) and Claud. I
don't know who the other sons were, but, with the Swedish connection,
his descendants could well include the two Hughs, above. (The genealogy
of this part of the family may well be available at Trinity College,
Dublin, who have many of the early genealogies of late 17th century
(nouveau) Irish families. Cary's Irish lists may well have more info, if
you are able to get yourself to the London Society of Genealogists.
The Earls (and Dukes) of Abercorn descend from Gilbert de Hamilton who
was father of Walter Fitz Gilbert Hamilton, of Cadzow, living 1294/5,
named in the homage roll, 1296.
It has to be said, however, that Hamilton is a very common Scots name.
What is your Hamilton link?
Renia
Hello Graham,
The Hamilton lines I find files on (Preston, Grange, Cambuskeith and
Sanquhar) don't provide any leads to the individuals you've listed.
I'm glad to see Renia was there for you. I will keep my eyes open in
the meantime.
Good luck, and good hunting.
John
