Hello everyone,

I have been trying to find a place of origin for this family that is listed
in the 1620 Visitation of Devon.

I wondered if someone might be able to provide a translation of the
following Latin text at the heading of their entry in the Visitation:

" Sciant presentes et futuri ad ego Margosia At More in parva Viduitate mea
dedi, concesti et hac praesenti Carta mea confirmani, &c., dat. apud
Blackbounn die Dominica prox post fuista St Luca Evangelista Anno Regni
Regis. H. 4 3.

Omnibus Christi fidelibus, &c., Robtus Wolfe Vicaius de Broadwoodwidger dat.
Remittit et Relanit Johi More de St Collis More in Com. Devon Gener Dat.
Anno Reg. Regis Henrici Septimi 7"

In examining the arms of this family in the General Armoury of England they
are listed as follows:

Argent, a Chevron Sa. Between 3 moorcocks Sa. Crested gu

The arms are very similar to the Family of Saint Thomas More of London
(1478-1535) beheaded by Henry VIII. Those arms are described as

More (co Hants) Ar on a fesse between 3 moorcocks sa. as many mullets, or an
annulet of the last

Is there enough similarity that a relationship could be implied? Their Arms
certainly do not have any similarity to the other More/Moore family listed
in the Visitations of Devon. I have examined some of the ancestry of Sir
Thomas More, however cannot find any possible connection with my family.

The first entry in the Visitation is Robtus Moore de Moore at Moore who is
listed as marrying Jana/Jane Carew. I have been unable to determine how
this Jana/Jane fits into the wider Carew family. Any assistance would be
appreciated.

I suspect that this line of Moore's may derive their name from the Manor in
Broadwoodwidger, called Moor Malherbe or Moor Vipont, however the
description for John de St Colis More also confuses me as I'm not sure if St
Colis More is a location?

The later Moore descendants held land in Tavistock, Broadwoodwidger,
Germansweek, Lydford, Black Torrington, Virginstow and Cheriton Fitzpaine
(where they married into the Courtenay family).

Sincerely,

Cody Cockwill

The two texts are the start and finish of two charters. Their texts have been slightly corrupted, but they mean:

Know all men, present and future, that I Margery at More, in my pure widowhood, have given, granted and by these presents confirmed etc ... dated at Blackbounn on Sunday next after the feast of St Luke the Evangelist, 3 Henry IV

To all the faithful of Christ etc, Robert Wolfe, vicar of Broadwoodger, gives, remits and releases to John More of St Collis More in Devon, gent., ... dated ... 7 Henry VII.
