Dear Newsgroup ~

Complete Peerage 4 (1916): 419-420 (sub Dorset) has a good account of
the life of Thomas Grey, K.B.,K.G., 2nd Lord Marquess of Dorset (died
1530). Concerning Thomas Grey's marriages, it states in the text that
he married in 1509 Margaret Wotton, widow of William Medley. In
footnote a on page 420, however, the editor notes that "Dictionary of
National Biography says she [Margaret] was his 2nd wife, and that he
had previously married Eleanor, daughter of Oliver St.John, of Lydiard
Tregoze, Wiltshire."

As it turns out, Dictionary of National Biography is correct in its
statement that Sir Thomas Grey married (1st) Eleanor Saint John. This
marriage is indicated by two independant sources as follows:

1. Coll. Top. et Gen. 1 (1834): 310–311 (St. John pedigree)
(pedigree dates temp. Henry VII).

2. W. Flower Vis. of Yorkshire 1563–4 (H.S.P. 16) (1881): 278–281
(Scrope pedigree: "Elenor St. John wyf to Thomas Lord Marquys.").

Eleanor Saint John was the daughter of Oliver Saint John, Esq., of
Maxey, Northamptonshire and Lydiard Tregoz, Wiltshire, by Elizabeth,
daughter of Henry Scrope, Knt., 4th Lord Scrope of Bolton.
