I'm wrestling with Flower's 1563/4 Visitation of Yorkshire (HS vol 16)in
order to pinpoint the exact place, or confirm, where they slip into the
Everingham's of Stainbrough, Yorkshire, pedigree. I'd appreciate any help
you can provide.
According to Everingham (II), page 116, "Elsabeth or Betterys doughter of
Mathew Wentworth of Bretten" married Thomas Everingham of Stainbrough. A
footnote states that according to Ralph Brooke, this Thomas died in 9 Henry
VIII (1517/18). This would probably infer, as well, that Elsabeth/Betterys
(Beatrice)was born no later than say 1501. The visitation only provides for
one son, Henry Everingham, who married "Meryell doughter of Sir John Burton
of Kynsley." This Burton marriage is vectored by the Burton entry on page
46.
The Wentworth entry on page 340 provides a list of children for a Matthew
Wentworth. Interestingly, both Elsabeth and Beatryce are listed as
daughters. In a footnote on page 339, Mathew's will was dated 10 Nov 1505.
This Mathew does have a namesake grandson, but his will is dated 13 May
1572. Hence, it is very unlikely that this later Matthew is the father of
the sought after Elsabeth/Beatrice even though he also had a daughter named
Elsabeth.
I believe, therefore, that I've the right generation and father
(Wentworth/Woodroff). Incidentally, Elsabeth Wentworth and Thomas
Everingham are both third generations back in their respective familial
heraldic entries. Normally I wouldn't fuss so over visitations, but the
connections are so close to the time of the visitation that the information
recorded should be quite accurate. So, according to the visitation, the
generations from the connection back through the Wentworth's of West Bretton
would be:
1. Beatrice Wentworth dau. of Matthew Wentworth by Elizabeth Woodroff (dau.
of Sir Richard Woodroff of Wolley) m. Thomas Everingham of Stainbrough (d.
1517/18).
2. Matthew Wentworth, will dated 10 Nov 1505, son of Richard Wentworth by
Isabel Fitz William (dau. of Sir William Fitz William of Sprotborough)
3. Richard Wentworth, will dated 13 Oct 1488, son of Richard Wentworth of
Bretton by Maude Clifford (the visitation does not call her a Clifford, but
"Mawde Countess of Cambridge." The identity of Maude is noted by Brad Verity
in a msg to SGM, 2001-12-06 11:15:42 PST, Subject:Re: Who is the mother of
Dorothy Sutton, stating she was Thomas, 8th Lord Clifford's, third
daughter.)
4. Richard Wentworth, will date 1447, was the son of John Wentworth by Agnes
Dransfield (see footnote). The entry for the Wentworths of Elmsall, page
340, makes Richard the son of John Wentworth by Elizabeth Beaumont and
grandson of Wentworth/Dransfield. The cadet line of Wentworth of Bretton
melds into the Wentworths of Elmsall at this point.
Would someone confirm this? With additional details?
Cheers,
Kevan
I have a lot of Wentworth data in various files and may be able to help you
a bit. Unfortunately, I have sold this house and am moving on February 11th.
There is so much yet to do that I will be unsubscribing for a while and hope
to return in about a month or so. Remind me should I forget to follow
through on this.
Best,
Hap

I don't have materials on Wentworth of West Bretton organized [that branch
was not my main focus], but for what it's worth, from checking a few things
on the shelf, Clay's expanded version of Dugdale shows Matthew Wentworth
of West Bretton, w.d. 10 Nov. 1505, w.p. 10 Jan. 1505/6, printed in
Test. Ebor. 4:240 [I don't have that here], wife Elizabeth Woodruff, exec.
of hisband's will, issue:
1. Sir Thomas Wentworth, admon. 26 May 1543, IPM 24 Oct. 35 Hen. VIII
[1542] (which gives brother as heir, aged 50), m. Isabel Wentworth, d.
of Thomas Wentworth, of Elmsall, m. settlement 1 Aug. 23 Hen. VIII
[1508].
2. Thomas Wentworth, heir to his brother, b. roughly about 1493, w.d.
19 Aug., w.p. 21 Sep. 1557, m. Anne Dyneley of Swillington.
3. Elizabeth Wentworth, m. 1) Nicholas Kaye, of Woodsome, m. (2)
William Arthington of Castley.
4. Beatrix Wentworth, m. Arthur Kaye, of Woodsome, m. cov. 25
May 1517. [If Thomas Everingham d. 1517, Arthur Kay could
be her second husband.]
5. Ann Wentworth, m. John Brocklesby of Glentworth, Lincs.
6. Mary Wentworth, m. Sir John Burton, of Kinsley.
Flower's Visitation of 1567 [p. 175] gives an Anne, Elsabeth and
Margaret as daughters of Rychard Wentworth by Izabell FytzWilliam,
and another Anne, Elsabeth, and Margaret as daughters of his son
Matthew Wentworth by Elsabeth Woodroff, adding the fourth daughter
Beatrice. Flower's version gives no husbands for Matthew's daughters,
and gives the husbands of Rychard Wentworth's daughters as "Anne,
wyff to Browksby of Lyncolnshire" "Elsabeth, wyff to Arthur Key of
Woodsom, and after wyff to William Ardyngton of Castley" and
"Margaret, wyff to Sir John Burton."
Richard Wentworth's will was dated 3 Oct. 1488 and proved 10 Jan. 1488/9
[printed in Test. Ebor. 2:137]. In his will he mentions three daughters,
Cecily, Anne and Grace, who are each given 40 l. each as marriage portions.
Joseph Foster, Yorkshire Pedigrees, also gives what appears in Clay's account.
