I received a helpful reply to my earlier posting about the Roos (or Ros) family
of Gedney, co. Lincoln, which indicated that a Sir Robert de Roos, of Gedney,
married Erneburga, daughter of Robert Constable and his wife, Katherine de
Mauley. Can someone provide me with particulars of Erneburga's ancestry?

The person who supplied the identity of Sir Robert de Roos' wife thought that
this information came from a book on the Smith-Carrington family. Does anyone
have access to this book? If so, can they check it for information on the Roos
family of Gedney?

I am fairly sure that Erneburga was a Constable as Sir Robert and Erneburga de
Roos received their interest in Gedney, co. Lincoln, by conveyence from a
member of the Constable family, who in turn was a descendant and one of the
co-heirs of an earlier individual named Fulk d'Oyry. This is set out in the
Plea Rolls. If so, then I imagine that Gedney was Erneburga's maritagium and
that she likewise descends from Fulk d'Oyry of Gedney.

In closing, I wish to express special thanks to Paul Reed for directing me to
check the Lincoln Feet of Fines for the Roos family of Gedney. You're the
best, Paul!

All for now. Douglas Richardson

The book is available in the folio section and on microfilm at the FHL. The
problem with this genealogy, however, is that it is one of the greatest frauds
(or at least famous frauds) perpetrated on the genealogical public. Copinger
was even taken in by it for a time. So be wary of any information it contains.
You would certainly want to double check any records it cites to see if it was
really so.
