Hello All,

Maud de Campaign (or de Campania), d. after 1368, is an individual in the
ancestry of several English families whose origins are obscure. However,
through her two marriages to John de Lascelles of Escrick, and Sir Robert
Hilton of Swine, she numbers amongst her descendants the families of Hilton
of Swine, Hildyard of Winestead, Melton (Lord Lucy), Lascelles, FitzRandolph
and Savile. This is not to mention a number of 17th century emigrants to
America, listed below.

One possible lead has turned up. Amongt the entries taken from Gerard
Brault's 'Rolls of Arms of Edward I' , there is a record of the arms of one
knight serving in Scotland ca. 1300 named Sir Ernaud de Campane, also
identified on the same site as Arnoul de Caupenne [1]. This would appear to
be Arnaud de Caupenne, seigneur de Caupenne, who evidently served as
seneschal d'Agenais in 1307 and died ca. 1313/4 [2].

If anyone has any further information or leads that would either prove or
disprove such a connection, or has already established the ancestry of Maud
de Campaign, please advise. I have provided below a brief chart of her
descendants, and a list of the colonial emigrants referred to above.

Good luck, and good hunting.

John *

John,

I am afraid that I cannot contribute to Maude's ancestry. Regarding
her first husband, I have it as John FitzRanulf of Spennithorne,
grandson of Theophania de Lascelles. I believe that Magna Charta
Sureties by Weis has their marriage as October 1343. If the same person,
then she would also be ancestral to 17th c. immigrant to New England,
Edward FitzRandolph.

Hello Jay,

That is the same John: his father was Ranulf fitz Ralph of
Spennithorne, whom Weis (MC 5th ed., p. 193) says was 'sometimes called
Ranulf de Lascelles' . His son John fitz Ranulf I show as holding both
Escrick and Ellerton-on-Derwent, co. York in addition to Spennithorne, hence
the appelation ' de Lascelles ' .

Weis shows his widow, Maud 'de Campania', as marrying 2ndly. Robert de
Hilton, lord of Swine; this dovetails with the genealogy in Poulson's History
of the Seignory of Holderness (Vol. II, p. 198) .

Cheers,

John *

do you know anything about the precise location of this Lascelles?
location-names are often used in several different places, but
is it maybe Lachelles, near Compiegne? & near Monchy Humières,
a favorite vacation spot of Louis XIV but dating from much earlier...
Lachelles was in the middle of a vast & empty plain, used for some
royal military camps, etc... with a starchworks & farms, apparently
fairly well documented historically...
there might be more data available about him at Compiègne, if you can tell
me more about him to start with & find the subject of interest..

Campaign might well be a spelling variation of Compiègne, mistranslated from
the french...

in fact, Compiègne isnt from Campaigne, or countryside, nor from Campaign
as in military or elections, but is from the roman Compendium, meaning
apparently, "plenty", "abondance"... but the fellow compiling the data
may not have known that as it's only recently brought back to light...

I can put you in touch with the curator of the "fonds anciené at Compiegne,
for further research by mail, if you like but am not sure he can or will
help...
perhaps it's not that important? or perhaps there's more on the line there?

Picot de Lascels is said to be the ancestor of the Earls of Harewood. He was a
tenant of Count Alan in in Lincolnshire and Yorkshire, particularly in Richmond,
Yorkshire. Keats-Rohan, in Domesday People, says "there are no firm indications
as to the identification of his toponym", but that as a tenant of County Alan,
he was likely a Breton. She gives a possible derivation as Ceaux, Manche in the
Ducay canton, a place then in Normandy, but part of Brittany before about 1009.
The lineage of the Earls of Harewood in 1953 Burke's Peerage begins with John de
Lascelles of Hinderskelfe in Yorkshire, now known as Castle Howard, who was
living in 1315..
