Katherine de Roet was the mistress and later wife of John of Gaunt, Faris's
Plantagenet Ancestry does not seem to mention her parents, only states her
brother in law was Geoffrey Chaucer. John and Katherine's daughter Joan
Beaufort married Ralph de Neville, the ancestor of one of my Wyatts.
Can anyone recommend reading that might trace the de Roet family back
further than War of the Roses, perhaps she is connected with William the
Conqueror, and Charlemagne. Joan was Ralph's de Neville's second wife.
Thanks
Jacob L. Bateman III or Le.

It seems that Katherine was the daughter of Payn de Roet. Also Ralph's
first wife was Mary de Ferrers daughter of Robert de Ferrers. What published
work is there on that family.

Katherine de Roet is, of course, better known as Katherine Swynford (wch
was her married name when she became first the governess for John of
Gaunt's children, then Gaunt's mistress (and then mother of the Beauforts
and progenitrix of every English monarch since 1461--if you don't count
the "Readeption" of Henry VI). She is buried in Lincoln Cathedral, where
her tomb (plain, w/ no effigy) at least as late as 1985, when I saw it
myself, bore a small placard telling of her life and relationship(s) to
John of Gaunt, and ending w/ the sentence: "This is the Katherine of Anya
Seton's famous novel." Amusing, no?

Beyond this is the great mystery (no one knows who Payn's wife was or his
ancestry). I thought someone had found some general material on the surname in
Flanders, but I have not worked on it.

There is precious little known about Katherine Roet's background. There is
some evidence that her father, Sir Payen/pagan Roet was a Flemish Knight and
a member of the royal household, but of his ancestry , nothing is known, nor
of his wife's. Any good biography on Chaucer will have quite a lot on the
Roets/Gaunts. Chaucer, for that matter, is also another stumbling block...was
he the father of Thomas, speaker of the house of Commons (from whom I
descend), or was he not ? Has any further reseelucidated this particular
mystery?

Dear David, That is amusing!
My four children are descended via my ex. from the heroine of another of
Anya`s novels, "The Winthrop Woman", who was Elizabeth Fones Winthrop
Hallett. She married thirdly William Hallett, and my children descend from
both of their two sons.
Interesting stuff...

An Article should be published about family of Katherine Roet in 2001
in «Mémoires de la Société généalogique canadienne-française». That
could be interesting...
