Everingham of Birkin Revisited

Hi all,

Its probably time to update my post of November 2009 on the Everingham family of Birkin, since I have found a few more sources for the family since that time and there were some mistakes in the original post.

1. Robert de Everingham
Robert de Everingham married Isabel, daughter of John de Birkin, and sister and sole heiress of Thomas de Birkin. Robert de Everingham died in June 1246 and Isabel in July 1252.

1.2 John de Everingham
Sir John de Everingham second son of Robert de Everingham was probably born around 1235. He married Joan daughter of Stephen de Meinill the third. He died before 1275. Joan was living in 1280.

1.2.1 Adam de Everingham
Adam de Everingham of Birkin was probably born about 1260. He died after February 1327 and was survived by his widow Lucy, who was living in 1353.

1.2.1.1 Sir John de Everingham
Sir John de Everingham of Birkin was probably born about 1285. He married, before 1318, Beatrice. He died after November 1357.

1.2.1.1.1 Thomas de Everingham
Thomas de Everingham of Birkin was probably born about 1320. The name of his wife is unknown. He died about 1370.

1.2.1.1.1.1 Sir John de Everingham
Sir John de Everingham of Birkin was probably born about 1360. He married firstly Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Gascoigne of Hunslett by his wife Beatrice Ellis, and secondly Alice, daughter of Peter Mauleverer of Beamsley, widow of Sir John Middleton of Stockeld. He died before November 1434. Alice was living in November 1446.

1.2.1.1.1.1.1 Sir William Everingham
Sir William Everingham of Birkin, son by first wife, was probably born about 1405. The name of his wife is unknown, he died after January 1463.

1.2.1.1.1.1.1.1 Richard Everingham
Richard Everingham of Birkin was probably born about 1425. The name of his wife is unknown. He was attainted for high treason in November 1461.

1.2.1.1.1.1.1.1.1 Sir John Everingham
Sir John Everingham of Birkin was probably born about 1450. He married Katherine, one of the three daughters and co-heirs of Sir Edmund Wadsley of Wadsley Hall near Sheffield. He died on 20 June 1502. Katherine predeceased him.

1.2.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1 Sir John Everingham
Sir John Everingham of Birkin was born about 1466. He married Margaret, daughter of Sir William Scargill of Thorpe. She died shortly before 1 July 1502. He died in October 1528.

1.2.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1 Sir Henry Everingham
Sir Henry Everingham of Birkin was probably born about 1490. He married firstly, Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Lyndley of Lyndley. He was divorced from her in October 1537. She married secondly Thomas Barton. Henry married secondly Anne, daughter of Sir William Fairfax of Steeton. He died on 17 March 1546. Anne married secondly Edmond Eltofte and was living in 1557.

1.2.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1 Thomas Everingham
Thomas Everingham of Birkin born in 1543, only legitimate son. He died before October 1547. His heirs were his three sisters, Joan, Eleanor and Frances.

Further to Henry Everingham of Withybrook, MP for Warwicks in 1459; I now think he was one of the sons (probably the youngest) of Sir John of Birkin and Elizabeth Gascoigne.
He acquired his Warwickshire seat by marriage to Anne Botener, whose father had purchased it from the daughter and heiress of George de Castell.

Another son of Sir John, Richard, was a priest and became rector of Birkin.
