Dear Newsgroup ~

Complete Peerage 12 Pt. 2 (1959): 445-446 has a good account of the
life of Richard Welles (died 1470), Lord Welles and Willoughby. The
author states that Sir Richard Welles "m[arried], 2ndly (lic. York, 10
Aug. 1468, as Lord Welles and Willoughby, to m. in the chapel within
the manor-house at Harlsey), Margery, widow of John Ingleby, da. of
Sir James Strangways, of Harlsey Castle, in Osmotherley, co. York,
Speaker of the House of Commons, by his 1st wife, Elizabeth, 1st da.
and coh. of Philip (Darcy), 6th Lord Darcy and Lord Meinill." The
author indicates that Richard Welles was survived by his 2nd wife,
Margery, who he states "was about to take the veil, 8 May 1475." No
further information is provided regarding the subsequent history of
Margery.

The online A2A Catalogue (http://www.a2a.org.uk/search/index.asp)
contains several helpful records of Lady Margery Welles' life. Among
these records is an item which confirms that she and Richard Welles
were married in 1468, as well as an abstract of her hitherto unnoticed
will dated 20 March 1501. Lady Welles' will specifically names her
"brother Thomas Strangways," thus confirming her maiden name.

CP XII/2 p. 446 says they m. c. 10 Aug 1868.

CP refers to Test Ebor, III, 343 for Margery's forthcoming entry into a
nunnery. This sounds like a will. In principle nuns (and monks) had no
property so could not make a will, so did she leave the nunnery
subsequent to 1475?

I have some diaries from the 18th century in which my lady forbear, a
Mrs Powys, regularly refers to "her brother Powys" meaning not her
brother but her brother-in-law. I suspect she was following a
well-established practice over many centuries in which "brother" also
meant "brother-in-law".
