Dear Newsgroup ~

While we're discussing Sir William Lucy (died 1360) and his first
wife, Margaret Neville, daughter of Sir John Neville, I thought I'd
share a new addition for Complete Peerage which concerns Sir William
Lucy's more remote ancestors, Sir Geoffrey de Lucy (died 1234), of
Newington, Kent , Cublington, Buckinghamshire, Dallington,
Northamptonshire, etc., and his wife, Juliane le Despenser.

The authoritative Complete Peerage includes a good account of Sir
Geoffey de Lucy (died 1234). Regarding his wife, Juliane le
Despenser, the following information is supplied:

"He married, in 1207, Juliane, widow of Piers de Stokes, steward to
King John (dead s.p. by August 1206), and daughter of Aymer le
Despenser, by Amabel or Maud, daughter and coheiress of Walter de
Chesney, by Eve de Broc. She was living in 1227."

The source given for Juliane le Despenser being alive in 1227 is Rot.
Lit. Claus., vol. ii, pg. 212.

The following fine shows that Juliane le Despenser, wife of Sir
Geoffrey de Lucy, was still living 25 November 1230. The fine
concerns lands in cos. Bedford, Buckingham, Gloucester, Hertford,
Northampton, and Surrey.

Source: Bedfordshire Historical Record Society, 6 (1919): 88.

"326. Westminster. Quindene of St. Martin [25 November, 1230].
William de Mesy against Geoffrey de Lucy and Juliana his wife, by
Richard de Wodeham attorney of Juliana. Manor of Cernel. Plea of
warranty of charter. Right of William as that which he had of their
gift. To hold from them and the heirs of Juliana, doing therefor the
service of two-thirds of a knight's fee. William quitclaimed to them
and the heirs of Juliana his right in the lands and tenements which
belonged to Walter de Chenneto [Chesney] and Eva his wife.
[cclxxxiii. 9 (79)]. Glouc' Bed' Surr' Hertford' Buk' Norht'." END
OF QUOTE.
