A slight conundrum and judging by the internet activities on the Mallory
family, it might not be ended yet!
Walter Cotton, son of William Cotton, born c 1543 and Elizabeth Mallory
was born c 1568.
Elizabeth Mallory was a daughter of Richard, later Sir Richard Mallory,
Lord Mayor of London in 1564, and Anne Smith. Anne Smith, or Smythe, was
reputedly a sister of Sir Clement Smith/Smythe, husband of Dorothy Seymour,
sister of Jane.
Richard Mallory was a member of the company of Mercers in 1534 and had also
been previously mentioned in 1531. This would imply he was born 1500-10 at
the latest.
The diary of Henry Machin, 1550-63 says that the funeral of Mistress Mal
(l)ory was on 26/4/1560, Anne, wife of alderman Richard, took place in the
chapel of St Thomas Acre - she died in childbed with her 17th child! 14 of
which survived.
Richard Mallory then married, on 8/4/1561, Elizabeth Pakington, widow of
John Lane (+12/9/1557), daughter of Robert Pakington and Elizabeth Baldwin
(daughter of Sir john, Lord chief Justice of the Common Pleas and Agnes
Dormer. (Agnes Dormer was daughter of William and sister of sir Robert)
(National Archives , probate 11/27).
S.V. Mallory Smith ( a history of the Mallory Family, 1984) suggests that
Richard Mallory was the Great grandson , or great great grandson of Robert
or Thomas Mallory of Papworth St Agnes. Has any work been done on the
ascendance of this Sir Richard Mallory?
Thanks and a happy New year to all!
Peter
