ADA SANFORD, M WALTER FOLIOT, of Whiteford, Devon & Melbury Turberville,
Dorset. She was aged 24 in 1299. Her parentage was identified in a plea
concerning land at Daunteseye, 1312. Died 1331. She had issue: NEHGR, Vol
142, pp 241-2

JOAN FOLIOT, M before 1312 NICHOLAS de PERCY, of Kildale, Yorks. (Died 6
Aug. 1324). M 2nd Sir John Maltravers, Kt., d 1341. M 3rd Sir Alexander
Venables, Kt. She had issue: (See PERCY of KILDALE) MCS II, p 159 NEHGR,
Vol 142, pp 241-2 CP VIII, p 580

Any connection with this Sanford family and an Alice Sanford (died 1317)
who married Robert de Vere, Earl of Oxford (died 1296)? Alice was the
daughter of Gilbert Sanford and (Lorette?)

It is doubtful that Lorette (or Lora) le Zouche was the mother of Alice de
Sanford, wife of Robert de Vere. Lorette had a manor in Wiltshire as her
maritagium, which property she settled on a niece. Lorette's action is
typical of other childless women in this period who gave or sold theiir
property as they neared death. I hope this helps. DR

There was no children as far as I am aware to Venables and just the two to

The reference is Collectanea Topographica Genealogica Vol V1 p335

There appears to be an inconsistency between NEGHR Vol 142. and Hutchins. Hutchins has
Hawise Sanford, the daughter of Fulke Basset. See the following

By a deed dated on Monday next after the feast of St. Mark, 55 Hen 111, Beatrix de
Turberville released to Hawysia de Sanford five marks annually rent, part of 10 l.
which the said Beatrix was entitled to receive annually by way of dower out of
Melbury, under a settlement made by a fine between Fulk Basset, Bishop of London, and
said Beatrix. Witness, Nicholas Bretun, Aval de Rocheford, Ad. Foliot, and others.
Hawisa de Sanford is described on her monumental brass in the church as daughter of
the Lord Basset. and from the terms of this deed she seems to be the owner of this
manor. Fulke Basset, bishop of London, mentioned in the deed, was also Lord Basset of
Wycombe.
