I am seeking information on John Graham born ca. 1590 in Scotland. He was
either the 4th Earl of Montrose or the 1st Marquis of Montrose. He had a son
named General James Graham (1612-1650) who married Madeline Carnegie. The
General had a son named John Graham (ca. 1630-?) who married Lady Martha Jane
Clousto?. They and their son James Graham were banished Scotland in 1670 and
came to Westmoreland Co., VA.

Thanks for you help.
Regards
Phyllis

According to the Encyclopedia Britannica he was the 4th Earl. He died in 1626.
His son, the general--a great figure in Scottish history--was raised to a
marquessate in 1644 by Charles I, after a series of spectacular victories. He was
hanged in 1650 after a great deal of typically Scottish political treachery. (My
name is Gordon, so I'm licensed to make ethnic slurs about Scots).

The first Marquess of Montrose's son, James (1633-1669), is known as "the good
Marquess." his grandson, James (1684-1742) was made Duke of Montrose in 1707 for
his services in bringing about the Union that year. He is the man portrayed so
vividly by John Hurt in the Rob Roy movie of a few years ago (in which, for
reasons known only to Hollywood, he is called the Marquess, not Duke, of
Montrose, which he already was by the time of the movie).

I don't have CP at hand (donations cheerfully accepted) but this John Graham
would have been older than "the good Marquess" and outlived him and had a son, so
something must be amiss.
