About 25 years ago, my grandmother's cousin completed a family history which
showed direct lineage through Goda/Godgifu (daughter of King
Ethelred/AEthelred "the unready" and Emma of Normandy) back to King Egbert.
In my cousins research, he showed Goda marrying Walter de Maigne/Mantes.
Their son is reported as Rudolph/Ralph de Maigne whose son is Harold de
Maigne whose son is John de Maigne who married Grace de Traci/Tracy. Their
child is William Traci/Tracy whose descendent Elizabeth Tracy (b 1745)
centuries later married Asa Branch (b1744) who are my gggg grandparents. In
recent research of my own, I have not been able to confirm the marriage of
Goda and Walter de Maigne. Since our royal ancestory is treated as "gospel"
at family reunions, I need some expert help showing my error (or my
cousins!). Any info or research tips welcomed!!!

While the marriage of Goda is supported, what you need to question is the
descent of your 18th century Tracy from the medieval Tracy family. I know
of no documented descent of the medieval Tracys to modern times, and this
kind of thing is likely to be invented, as you well know.
