Hello All,

The following detailed pedigree provides the documented descent of
Lathom of Lathom, from Robert fitz Henry, founder of Burscough priory,
down to Sir Thomas de Lathom (d. 17 Sept 1370), first member of the
family appearing in Weis' Magna Carta Sureties (5th ed.).

Several suggestions or questions still remain to be resolved:

1. It is alleged that Robert fitz Henry was the son of Henry
de Torbock or Tarbock, whose (younger ?) son Richard,
an historical individual, was the ancestor of Torbock of
Torbock (descendants of Oliver Mainwaring, take note).

2. The connection of the Lathom family with Ormskirk, Lancs.
supposedly originated with a marriage of Robert fitz Henry
to a daughter of one Orm 'Magnus' (who is also held to
have been a son-in-law of Theobald Walter, ancestor of the
Butlers of Ormonde & c.).

Through the descent to Stanley, Earls of Derby, and to Savile of
Thornhill (and of Copley), the Lathom family is ancestral to many
list members, not to mention the late Queen Mother, Lady Diana
Spencer, and a host too numerous to mention [see prior posts re: the
Savile families on SGM].

~ Note to Leo, Ian et al: the Genealogics identification numbers
for the first descendant (Lathom, Savile) now reflected on the
Genealogics webpage are given below for reference.

All relevant comment, criticism or added documentation is welcome,
as always.

Cheers,

John *
