Does anyone have any information on Sir Henry Fitz Lewis, knt., of Nevendon and
Bradfields in North Benfleet, Essex and of London, living 1480, dead by 1488,
who married (lst) Elizabeth Beaufort, daughter of Edmund Beaufort, Duke of
Somerset, and (2nd) by 1475, Eleanor (Hungerford) (White) Tyrrell, widow of
John White of Farnham, Surrey and South Warnborough, Hampshire and of Sir
William Tyrrell, Knt., of Heron, Essex.

It appears that Sir Henry Fitz Lewis had one daughter and heiress by his lst
wife, Mary Fitz Lewis, who married (lst) Anthony Wydeville, Earl Rivers, who
died without issue in 1483, and (2nd) by 1488, Sir George Neville, Knt. In
1488, George and Mary sold Mary's interest in her father's manor called
Bradfields in North Benfleet, Essex.

Does anyone have any information on Mary's descendants by her Neville marriage?
Or on Sir Henry Fitz Lewis' wives?

The article on Earl Rivers in the second edition of Cokayne's *Complete
Peerage*, vol. XI [1949], pp. 22-24, states (on p. 24 in note (i)) that she
and Sir George appear to have had a daughter Anne, who married Sir John
Markham. The note cites:

Morant, Essex, vol. i, p. 213
Thoroton, Hist. of Notts, vol. i, p. 343
Vis. Notts (Harleian Soc), p. 24

None of which I've seen.

On p. 24, note (g) of the same source, Sir Henry's IPM is cited as "Ch.
Inq. p. m., 20 Edw. IV, no. 86", which I haven't seen.

From O F Brown's "The Tyrells of England" it would seem that the following
is the Sir William Tyrell you are after, but his daughters don't fit in
with your information. This is the only Sir William of Heron. (Note O F
Brown's book is quite good, but I have found errors in it.)

WILLIAM Tyrell (d 14 Apr 1471 bat of
Barnet, bur Augustine Friars,
London); Sir; Lancastrian; In
1468 knighted at bat of
Northampton; m1 Eleanor/Alianor d of
Sir ROBERT DARCY* of Maldon, m2 unknown.

His daughters (by which wife is unknown) are shown as

1)Alice m JOHN ROCHESTER

2)Maud m RICHARD WHITE
(and is said to have left Susan,
who d afrter 1564, a wealthy;
confidant of Queen Mary. Susan m
THOMAS TONGE, Charenceux
king of arms (who died -1534/6)

He also left sons

The marriage of Maud and Richard White is stated to have been found in V.
Hants 1530-1634 (Note Farnham is in Surrey, but right on the boarder with
Hampshire = Hants)

No second wife of Maud is shown, nor can I see any refs to Hungerford.

Susan Tonge -said- to be the daughter of Maud and Richard White of Hutton,
Essex.

I don't know if Henry Fitz Lewis's family is covered, but you might want to
check Rev. H. L. Elliot, "Fitz Lewes, of West Hordndon, and the Brases at
Ingrave," Transactions of the Essex A. S. (N. S.) 6:(1912)28-53. There is also
the VCH Essex, and the biographies which cover the varioius Members of
Parliament involved here (including Anthony Wydeville) in the House of Commons,
History of Parliament series.

Hi Adrian:

Thank you for the Tyrrell information. Yes, it appears you found the right Sir
William Tyrrell. I didn't know that he was killed at the battle of Barnet in
1471. I was glad to have that information. Do you have any idea where
information on deaths at this battle can be found?

As you noticed, Sir William Tyrrell's daughter, Maud, subsequently married his
widow's, Eleanor (Hungerford) White's son, Richard White.

When you have a moment, can you check the Tyrrell book again to see what it
says about Sir Thomas Tyrrell's wife, Anne Marney. The visitations give Sir
Thomas two wives, one named Emma Marney, the other Anne Marney. But I think
there was only one wife and that she was Anne Marney. Roskell takes this
position as well. He specifically states that Anne's marriage to Sir Thomas
Tyrrell was arranged by her father's executors. Since Anne's father died in
1414, when Sir Thomas was still young himself, I'd have to guess that this was
Sir Thomas' only marriage.

When you respond, please supply full bibliographic information on the Tyrrell
book such as full author and title, date of publication, and pages numbers for
all items cited including the information on Sir William Tyrrell.

Thanks so much. You're the best! Douglas Richardson, Chandler, Arizona

Richard,

Did William Tyrrell and Eleanor Hungerford have any children? Who were
the children of Richard White and Maud Tyrrell?

Also, you mentioned that Margaret Gainsford married Robert White (ca 1456
- 1518), son of John White and Eleanor Hungerford. Do you (or anyone else
reading this) have anything more on the Gainsford family? I have a John
Gainsford (1469 - 1540) married to Anne Hawte, daughter of Richard Hawte
and Elizabeth Tyrrell. John and Anne were the parents of four daughters:
Anne, Mary, Catherine, and Rosa.

I have John Gainsford as the son of John Gainsford and Anne Worsley.
I have Richard Hawte as the son of William Hawte and Joan Wydeville.
I have Elizabeth Tyrrell as the daughter of Thomas Tyrrell and Elizabeth
(Flambert?)

Any connection with your Margaret Gainsford?

Thank you.

Benjamin
