The Visitation of Yorkshire 1563-1564 has an outline pedigree which
runs thus:
1. Henry Rockley
2. Robert Rockley married Cecily
3. Robert Rockley married Elizabeth
4. Sir Robert Rockley married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir William
Fitzwilliam of Sprotborough by the daughter and coheir of Ralph, Lord
Cromwell
5. Robert Rockley
6. Sir Robert or Roger Rockley
Roskell et al (History of Parliament 1386-1422, vol 4) add further
details about Sir Robert Rokeley, MP. They say he was born about
1340, son of Robert Rokeley (d 1340) by Cecily Oxspring. He is given
Elizabeth Fitzwilliam as a first wife (and they are said to have had
three sons: Thomas, pardoned with his father in 1393; Robert, the
eventual heir, and John, died 1419) and Alice Sheffield as a second,
and is said to have died about 1415.
HoP alleges that Hunter inserted an additional generation - at (3)
above, but it seems to me that it is HoP that is likely in error here.
(a) they dismiss the statement that Thomas Sheffield (ff 1402) was Sir
Robert Rokeley's grandfather, and decide he must have been father-in-
law instead. If Sir Robert was the son of the man born c1340, there
is no chronological objection to his having an elderly maternal
grandfather as late as 1402 - cf Elizabeth Fitzwilliam, whose maternal
grandmother (Maud Bernake) survived until 1419.
(b) it is chronologically impossible for Elizabeth Fitzwilliam to fit
into the place HoP gives her in their deconstruction of the Rokeley
pedigree. Her grandmother Maud Bernake (Lady Cromwell) was born circa
1337, which makes it unlikely that she would marry a man born circa
1340; her earliest birth date must be circa 1363 - although 1370 is
more likely (her oldest surviving brother was born in 1377)..
(c) it seems Sir Robert survived past 1415, for he appears as one of
the witnesses to a deed dated 3 May 1422 (WWM/D/84, Wentworth
Woodehouse Muniments); another document from these archives (WWM/D/74)
shows he was knighted by 10 April 1390, when he witnessed an earlier
deed. Robert Rokeley, junior, is named in a deed of 7 May 1416 (WWM/D/
80).
It seems to me that the Visitation pedigree is correct in the number
of generations it gives, and that Sir Robert Rokeley, MP, was likely
the grandson rather than son of the Robert who died in 1341.
A descent from the Rokelys may be found in the pedigree of the Drax
[Drakes] family, also in the Visitation; Robert Drax married Eleanor,
the daughter of Robert Rokeley - presumably Robert Rokeley, jumior,
the son of Sir Robert.
MA-R
Dear Michael,
Thanks for bringing up those problems relating to the Rockley
pedigree. Based on what you have at present, and minus those things
we do not have to hand (direct evidence as to several relationships
being the greatest), I agree that Hunter is more likely correct that
the HoP account.
The following is my poorly documented pedigree of Rockley as I
have it at present, down to the marriage of Eleanor Rockley and Robert
Drax. The one thing of substance this may add is the connection
(courtesy of Alfred S. Ellis) provided by the marriage of Henry de
Rockley and Constance, daughter of Richard le Tyes and Alice de
Tankersley. By virtue of this connection, the Rockleys have an early
collateral relationship with the Wentworths, and descents from the
Elands, Thornhills, and Adam fitz Swain (via Nevill of Mirfield and
Redburne, and by my conjecture also via Thornhill). This may provide
some weak additional chronological basis for further research on the
Rockleys.
Cheers,
John *

Dear John
Many thanks - that's very helpful indeed. I attach some brief
comments - I will try to do some work on this family in London next
week.

I am sympathetic to your view that there were two Sir Roberts, father
and son. You may have seen the online article by William Morton
detailing the history of the chantry that Sir Robert Rockley and his
wife Elizabeth set up; this refers to a deed of 1386 in which he is
called a knight. Assuming that this is the elder Robert (son of
Cecily Oxspring) it seems the Visitation is right in calling his wife
Elizabeth. Do you have a source - other than HoP - for the Sheffield
marriage being to an Alice?
I note in the index to York wills, there was a probate grant of 4
March 1433 for "Dame Alice Rokley of Shirwodd" (Vol 3 folio 375) -
could she have been a second wife and widow of the younger (Sir)
Robert, whose marriage to Elizabeth Fitzwilliam is noted below?

As you probably know, the York probate index shows his will was dated
the Saturday after the feast of the Nativity in 1448, and was proved
at York 11 February 1448-9 ("Robert Rokley, Esquire").

Dear John etal.,
I have a Rockley dtr. married to John Savile (c.

connection?

Dear Kay,
Unfortunately I don't see anything too helpful in my notes for
those early generations. I do have the following, from Baildon's work
on the Saviles (Yorks. Arch. Journal), for which I can give more
detailed citation if needed.
" 1252, Martinmas. - Ralph son of Hugh de Balnia demised to John de
Seyvill 2? bovates of land in the field of Smitheton [Kirk Smeaton]
and his rent in Skelbroke for 16 years, paying yearly 16s. Witnesses,
Richard Foliot, Robert de Stapilton, Robert Butiller, Reynald Conan.
In the writings of Robert Rockley of Rockley, esq. (Yorks. Arch.
Journal, vol. 12, p. 70).
" 1252. - John de Seyvill held in Smetheton, for the term of 16
years, lands of Ralph son of Hugh de Balnia, and rent in Skelbroke
[Will's Sayvill de eodem (Dodsworth)]. Witnesses, Robert Foliot,
Robert Stapleton, Robert Butiler. In the writings of Robert Rockley,
esq. (Yorks. Arch. Journal, vol. 12, p. 68). This appears to be a
variant of the last note, with the curious interpolation from
Dodsworth, which is not explained by the editor; it is probably one of
Dodsworth's numerous cross-references to other documents, and may
refer to Peter de Saville's inquisition."
The following are taken from W. Paley Baildon, The Family of
Savile, YAJ 28:389-392.
That there would have been a Rockley - Savile marital connection
in the period would not be surprising; I will keep my eyes open for
additional evidence.
Cheers,
John
