But I have recently released a few CDs which might be of direct interest to
folks here:
THE HERALDS' VISITATIONS
Visitation of London 1633-5
Visitation of Gloucester 1623
Visitation of Herefordshire 1569
Visitation of Worcester 1569
Visitation of Norfolk 1563, 1589, 1613
Visitation of Buckinghamshire 1634
Visitation of Huntingdonshire 1613
Visitation of Hertfordshire 1634
Visitation of Oxfordshire 1566, 1574, 1634
Visitation of Kent 1530, 1574 & 1592
Visitation of Kent 1619
These books include pedigrees of the major families in each county,
together with a description of their Coats of Arms. (The London one has the
Coats of Arms illustrated). In many cases the pedigrees are listed back to
Norman times.
For more details see the Archive CD Books Project pages at:
http://www.archivecdbooks.com
and look in the relevant county section.
And another excellent new CD is:
THE POPULAR HISTORY OF ENGLAND - AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF SOCIETY AND
GOVERNMENT FROM THE EARLIEST PERIOD TO OUR OWN TIMES
by Charles Knight 1856/1862
This 8 volume set is not dated but these are the first editions which took
Charles Knight (1791 - 1873 ) 6 years to complete.
With detailed information from B.C. 55 to 1867, and 66 full page steel
engravings plus over 1,000 in text illustrations these volumes will give
endless hours of absorbing reading.
There are over 4,000 pages in total, plus 66 full page and about 1,000 in
text illustrations and a double page plan: London and part of the suburbs
after the Great Fire in 1666.
The direct link to see more details and illustrations of this set of
volumes is:

ARCHIVE CD BOOKS - old books for genealogists reproduced on CD

When will you get to putting the "History and Antiquities of...." titled
books on CD? Or the VCH's? Though the visitations are great to have on CD,
they're certainly more common in the available library systems than say
Philip Morant's "The History and Antiquities of the county of Essex."
Additionally, one can, at least in the States, get many of the pedigrees via
the mail through various society lending libraries. These other books are
not so available. Any news?
Would it help if the subscribers of this list provide you a wish list?
Cheers,
Kevan
I do have some already for a few counties..... but as you suggest
(below) they are harder to come by. That's the main factor really.
>Or the VCH's?
Agreed... they have in most cases been re-published in printed form
(albeit somewhat expensively). I would need to get hold of out-of-
copyright originals to scan, and although I have seen odd volumes come
up at book dealers, sets are strangely elusive.
>Would it help if the subscribers of this list provide you a wish list?
>
>Cheers,
>Kevan
Nope Kevan <grin> .... wish lists are wonderful, (been there... done
that) but the main problem is that these are not the kind of books that
one can go out shopping for! But rest assured that if I do see *any*
more "History and Antiquities of... " then I would purchase them for the
Archive CD Books Project, and I am always on the lookout for them in
places where they could be borrowed. They are certainly the kind of
books that are ideal to get onto CD, so that they can be used as
references by anyone.
Best regards
I agree that the "History and Antiquity" type works would be of huge
interest to those interested in medieval genealogy, let alone all family
historians. Apart from Visitations, general county genealogies would also be
welcome. Listed below are some suggestions for starters, but we must be
patient - Rome wasn't built in a day (that was because Rod Neep wasn't
working on it!). I believe the VCH series is gradually going online, apart
from which some volumes are still under copyright.

I still think it would be better if we divided the sources up, scanned in the
source material, converted it to text (so it would take less time to download
and would be searchable) and made it available free to the public at large.
Paul
There Rod explains the way books are obtained, a mixture of loans from
archives/libraries, individuals and purchases for the project.
The books scanned are all out of print and in the main were only printed
in short runs perhaps only 50 - 150 copies and are therefore difficult
to obtain, if they were not it would be pointless to scan them to cd.
Rod cannot therefore predict which books are going to be available
though I am sure he would jump at the chance of Philip Morant's "The
History and Antiquities of the county of Essex." and similar books.
If you have any rare books in your collection contact Rod, I am sure he
would welcome the chance to scan your collection.
This leads to perhaps the most important part of the Archivecdbooks
philosophy, the profits generated by the sale of the cd are ploughed
back into the project, they produce funds to enable Rod to pay for the
renovation & or rebinding of books lent by archives and libraries so
that they will be accessible in another 100 or so years, they also
provide funds to purchase more rare out of print books for the project,
which are then given to the relevant archive after scanning.
It is a system where everybody wins, the archives get their books
renovated, individual lenders get a copy of their book on cd plus
another cd of their choice and a discount on future purchases, the
general public get the opportunity to purchase cd copies of rare books
at a reasonable price and Rod also gets a copy of every cd produced
(unfortunately for him he does not also get the time to read them). :-))
I have no hesitation in recommending that people lend their books to
Rod, I have lent over twenty of my books to him and they have come back
in perfect condition (the scanner Rod uses does no damage to the books,
unlike flat bed scanners).
This is the perfect chance to help your fellow genealogists and also
help the archives at the same time, remember everybody wins.
Cheers
