Nicholas probably connects with the main Loveyne/Louvain branch, but the
exact connection is unknown. I have Margaret de Vere as his wife.
Margaret Loveyne first married Richard Chamberlain.

I believe that Nicholas de Lovaine left a will, an abstract of which is
published in Testamenta Vetusta. Does anyone have a copy of that source or
access to a copy? If so, can you post a copy of the abstract?

As I recall, Nicholas mentions a brother and a brother-in-law in the will. I
believe Nicholas' ancestry can be traced. DR

Walter Lee Sheppard, Jr. "Sir Nicholas de Loveyne and his Two Wives. I"
The Genealogists' Magazine 15:254-255 :

"2. Abstract of the will of Sir Nicholas de Loveyne, (Drake, Hundred of
Blackheath p. 147): He bequeathed to his wife Margaret {de Vere}; to his
son Nicholas, then under age, 3000 marks owed him by the king; to his
daughter Margaret. Small bequests tp: John, Lord Beaumont; to Henry and
Thomas Beaumont; to the Hon. Lady Mohun [Joan, daughter of Bartholomew,
Lord Burghersh and wife of John, 2nd Lord Mohun. Drake also notes that
Joan, wife of Sir John de Northwode, was a sister of Bartholomew, Lord
Burghersh. Thomas and Roger de Northwode held property in the manor of
Ospreng which had belonged to Sir John Pulteney, but was held by Sir
Nicholas de Loveyne j.u. (Cal. Inq. XI, Nos. 147, 149). Cal Inq. X No.
623, on Robert de North wode (writ 26 July 34, Edw. III) shows that he
held Gatton of Sir Nicholas de Loveyne of his manor of Ospreng, Kent.
Thomas de Northwode, his son and heir, 'is 26+']. Sir Aubrey de Vere,
brother of his second wife; Sir Edward Barkle (Barklow?); Sir John
Pekbrugge (his brother-in-law and one of his executors); Sir Reginald
Malins, 'my cousin, a silver cup with my arms'; Sir Bernard Brocas; Sir
Edward St. John; Sir Robert Belknap; and Sir John Loudham, clerk.
Prayers to be said fot the souls of Dame Katharine St. John and of Roger
her son, 'whose inheritance I have gotten'. Filed at Lambeth Palace
'Nicholas de Loveyn, knt. Poplar St. My de Graces, Mdsx; Penhurst, Kent;
Notfield,Bristowe, Surrey; co Camb. Oxon. 1375 86 Sudbury'. Sir Nicholas
Harris Nicholas' Testamenta Vetusta (1826) I,98 gives a very full
abstract of this will, taken from a garbled copy in Harleian MSS. (See
Drake op.cit.)."

The only clue to his ancestry is Sir Reginald Malins, his cousin.

Hopefully, this has been enlightening.

Another clue in the abstract given by Kay was the mention of Penhurst

From the guide to Penshurst Place, early owners:

The first known owner was Sir Stephen de Penchester, Constable of Dover
Castle and Warden of Cinque Ports, died 1280

In 1338 Penshurst was bought by Sir John de Pulteney, 4 times mayor of
London. He died of the plague in 1349.

His widow (un-named) m2 Sir Nicholas de Lovayne

Their son, another Sir Nicholas de Lovayne was the next owner

The (again) it went to his widow's m2 to Sir John Devereux (-1392), but on
his death it went to Sir Nicholas de Lovayne's daughter Margaret.

Margaret m1 Richard Chamberlain and m2 John Seyntclere [St Clere]

This guide states that her four sons (2 by each m.) shared the estates
after her death. The youngest John Seyntclere sold his share (which
included Penshurst) to John Duke of Bedford (1389-1435)

As Margaret dau of Sir Nicholas de Lovayne inherited, it seems probably he
had no living son.

Does this help? not sure what the original query was.

This is not quite complete. Margaret Bereford = #1 Sir John Pultney; =#2
Sir Nicholas de Loveyne. Sir Nicholas married the Pultney heir to his
sister Margaret. The Pultney heir dsp. Sir Nicholas and Margaret
Bereford Pultney had at least one son, Nicholas who dsp. I do not think
that the younger Nicholas was ever knighted. The Pultney lands had been
settled on the Loveynes, so they ultimately passed to the younger
Nicholas' sister of the half blood, Margaret, who married Chamberlain
and St. Clare. Margaret's mother Margaret de Vere =#1 Henryfde Beaumont,
=#2 Sir Nicholas de Loveyne, #3 Sir John Devereux. Sir Nicholas's
sister Margaret =#2 Sir John de Pekkebrugge.

Hi Kay:

What evidence do you have that Sir John Pekbrugge's wife, Margaret, was the
sister of Sir Nicholas de Lovaine? DR
