Some more corroborating details of the family are presented on the
foundation of a chantry in the church of Annesley in 1363 for a secular
priest to pray for the souls of William de Wakebrugge and Robert de
Annesley, parson of Rodyngton, and John de Annesley, [III] in his Mass while
they should live and for their souls when dead, and also for the souls of
John de Annesley, knight, and Annora his wife, and of their father and
mother [presumably John II d. 1357]. The presentation was to remain with
William de Wakebrugge and Robert de Annesley and devolve to John de Annesley
[III] and heirs male, brother Thomas and heirs male, brother Geoffrey and
heirs male.[Thoroton's Nottinghamshire, v.2 p.268]
This descent also indicates that the marriage between Sir John Annesley III
and Isabel, niece and heir of Sir John Chandos, must have been a later one
for him, because Isabel is known to have died without issue. The dates show
that this is quite possible assuming his grandfather was born about 1260 and
in his majority when granted free warren of his lands in 1285. John III was
certainly alive in 1263 at the foundation of the chantry.
That John V was grandson and heir of Thomas Annesley is borne out by a grant
of 14 H 6 by John to "John Makworth, Dean of Lincolne, John Curson, Thomas
Makworth, esq, and others in his mannors of Annesley, Bulcote, and
Gippesmere, and all his lands and tenements in Crophill and Cossale in this
county, and in Rawmershe and Bolton upon Dearne in the County of Yorke,
which descended to him after the death of Thomas de Annesley his
grandfather. The jury 18 H 6 found Alice Annesley to be daughter and heir of
the said John" [Thoroton's Nottinghamshire, v.2 p.268.] This means that John
V's father was not Hugh of Ruddington and that Hugh was not heir of Thomas
as shown in the Burke pedigree.
The Chaworth part of the pedigree is correct.
Comments anyone?
Cheers
