Here you have the sources. For the pre-Witiza generations, please search
the files or, if you prefer, I can send you a .pdf with the whole
discussion, which was kindly submitted to me by Ken Finton (whom I
thank). General source is Vaz de Sampayo's article, part 8; for the
sources I quote from him.
1/14/00 2:06 PM Janet Denham remarked:
>> >1. Guterre, Hermenegildo's father
this comes from the patronymic.
>> >2. Hermenegildo, Capt. of Royal Guard who died aft 841
There is no document that links Guterre and this previous Hermenegildo.
This one is attested by a chart published by fr. Bernardo de Brito (_Mon.
Lusit._) dated 770; he is given as count of Christians in Coimbra. This
chart asserts that this first Hermenegildo was descended from Egica;
gives H.'s father as Teudo and gfather as Athanaric, and lists among H's
children, Theodoric and Athaulf.
>> >3. Teudo, Count in Coimbra
>> >4. Athanaric, Count in Coimbra
>> >5. Athaulf, Count in Coimbra
>> >6. Sisebut, Count in Coimbra
I must check the sources in Gayo; please wait a bit. This line is
`traditional,' and has been carried down since the 16th century at least.
It sort of fills in the gap between Egica and the first Hermenegildo.
The second gap (H I to II) is bridged by onomastics and by the more or
less hereditary succession of the counts of christians in Coimbra.
>> >7. Egica, King of the Visigoths
Not Witiza. Sisebut was Witiza's brother.

>> >quoting from Luiz de Mello

That's it.
I'll look for the sources for the Sisebut-Athaulf-Athanaric line. Sampayo
quotes ES, XIX, 174. Does anyone have it at hand?
