Dear Newsgroup ~

Complete Peerage 7 (1929): 475-476 (sub Latimer); 9 (1936): 502-503
(sub Neville); and 12 (2) (1959): 660-661 (sub Willoughby) all have
good accounts of Elizabeth le Latimer (died 5 Nov. 1395), suo jure
Lady Latimer, who married (1st) Sir John de Neville, K.G., 3rd Lord
Neville of Raby (died 17 Oct. 1388), and (2nd) Sir Robert de
Willoughby, Knt., 4th Lord Willoughby of Eresby (died 9 Aug. 1396).
Regarding her 2nd marriage to Sir Robert de Willoughby, the following
information is provided in the Latimer account. Similar information
is provided in the Neville and Willoughby accounts.

"[Elizabeth le Latimer] married, 2ndly, as [his] 3rd wife, Sir Robert
Willoughby, Lord Willoughby, of Eresby. She died 5 Nov. 1395, and was
buried at Guisborough. [She left a] will dated 18 Oct., proved 10
Nov. 1395 ... Lord Willoughby died 9 August 1396, holding
Iselhampstead, Bucks, and some other estates in right of his late
wife." END OF QUOTE.

In footnote j on page 475, Complete Peerage indicates that Elizabeth
le Latimer and Sir Robert de Willoughby had a daughter, Margaret, who
is said to have died unmarried.

As we can see, no date for the marriage of Elizabeth le Latimer (died
1395) and Sir Robert de Willoughby is provided, although we can be
certain that the marriage was brief, as Sir Robert de Willoughby's 1st
wife, Margery la Zouche, died 18 October 1391, and was buried at
Spilsby, Lincolnshire.

Fortunately, there is other evidence in existence which narrows down
the date of this marriage. Bridges, History & Antiqs. of
Northamptonshire 2 (1791): 297 indicates that Elizabeth, Lady de
Nevill alone presented to the church of Corby, Northamptonshire (a
Latimer holding) in March 1391 and again on 6 April 1392. Elsewhere
Bridges, History & Antiqs. of Northamptonshire 2 (1791): 224 indicates
that Sir Robert de Wylughby presented to the church of Burton-Latimer,
Northamptonshire (another Latimer holding) on 20 April 1394.

Thus we can tell that the marriage of Elizabeth le Latimer and Sir
Robert de Willoughby took place after 6 April 1392 (when she presented
alone) but before 20 April 1394 (when Sir Robert presented to one of
her family holdings).
