There seems to have been some interest in a posting of references for
the ancestry of Eleanor of Aquitaine which D. Spencer Hines posted not
long ago as "Ahnenreihe 4.1."

Since I have been practicing with the facilities of my newly updated
computer program, Reunion 5, producing a six-generation ancestry for
Eleanor seemed like a good exercise. It has turned out to be considerably
more clerical work than I had anticipated. If you find this format to be
an undigestible clutter, let me know. I'll try to figure out some simpler
and clearer format for future posts.

I think it's ruddy marvelous, Alan. The format is clear, concise,

Merci beaucoup and, in my opinion, Eleanor of Aquitaine would say the
same --- if she could but see it.

Quite true. Supposedly in the Bordeaux Cathedral. Yet there have been
fragmentary reports in these newsgroups that several places in France
claim that the marriage of Henry II and Eleanor took place in their
venue. Can we sort that one out? Perhaps some French cousins can help
with this one.

At least one recent report had him as Pons III Guillaume.

I believe they are often called "gisants". So says my guide-book to
the royal tombs in Saint-Denis, by Alain Erlande-Brandenburg, Editions
de la Tourelle, Paris, 1984.

>It would be good to know the proper term in English as well.

The adjective gisant in English means "lying dead or ill". I've
always used effigy to describe my own ancestors' grave figures,
whether lying or standing.
