"On August 17, 1862, "an International Academic meeting inaugerated a list
of William's Companions."

Participating were Monsieur E Caumont, chairman of the French Archeological
Society, with the approval of Mgr. Didot, Bishop of Bayeux, Monsieur Renier,
Vicar of Dives, Copunt Foucher de Careil, member of the Conseil General,
Monsieur Arnet, Mayor of Dives, presiding.

Reportedly, in addition to the following list carved and installed at the
Church at Dives-sur-mer, two other lists have been carved -- one on the
flagstones of Battle Abbey in Hastings, another in the Chapel of Falaise
Château (Calvados).

Can anyone comment on the accuracy of the list?

There is one member, an apparent ancestor of mine, who was not thought to
have been at Hastings but, rather to have followed with Hugh Montgommerie,
who was almost certainly "left" at home to man the fort and who was not
thought to be at Hastings either.

Has this list been more accurately updated? Can you provide a source?

I believe that it was Todd Famerie who, some time ago and tersely, called an
Olive Tree (gen site) list, "BOGUS." I don't know if this is the same list.

As I am pursuing the Montgommerie and Pantoul (Pantulph) dimensions, I will
appreciate your comments and corrections. No doubt others will appreciate
your contributions to this cause as well.

Rick can you specify the meaning of the "**" in the list you extracted?
Maybe it means "possible" or "hard-to-read" or "variant spelling" .... but what?
Thanks

Why do you see this as unrelated? Unrelated to what? We do discuss history
as well as genealogy. I would love to have an acceptable list of William the
Q's companions at Hastings.

Attempting to source this document I present the following additional
information. From the website http://www.geocities.com/cleopatrascove/History.htm

we find
<quote>
"In Halinshed’s copy of the Battel Abbey Roll, which is in English, appears
the name of Hamelin.A companion record is found in France in the roll in the
church in Dives, a copy of which is found in "The Driver Family," page 497:"The
Roll in the Church of Dives, Normandy" Of the Companions of William in the
Conquest of England, in 1066 by M. Leopold Delisle, Member of the French Society
of Archaeology, as found in Burke’s "Vicissitudes of Families," Vol.III.
p.423.Dives, a small town close to the sea-coast, in the Department of Calvados, in
Normandy. This town of Dives is of high note in French and English history,
for it was nigh to it, at the mouth of the Dive, that William the Conqueror and
his companions in arms met for the subjugation of England. Dives, in the
eleventh century, was one of the chief ports of the Duchy of Normandy. A fete was
here given. In August, 1862, to affix in the old church there a new and
carefully compiled list of the companions of William the Conqueror, in his conquest
of England, in 1066, - a companion record to that of the Battle Abbey, with
this difference; the latter being the roll of those who actually fought at
Hastings, while the one at Dives is that of those who actually fought at Hastings,
while the one at Dives is that of those who assembled for the expidition, and
were otherwise engaged in furthering the zConquest. This Roll was erected by
the French Society of Archaelogy in August, 1862, with permission of Mgr.
Didiot, Bishop of Bayeus, M. de Caumont being Director of the Society, M. the Abbe
Renier, Vicar of Dives, and M. le Comte Foucher de Cariel, Member of the
Conseil-General for the Canton."

My apologies. I don;t know why that is happening. However, for that posting,
I retitled a prior message, deleted the content and dubject and used the
reply mechanism for my own posting. The "electronics" must be more
sophisticated than I am although I have done this before without issue or
complaint.

Again, my apologies.

Unfortunately threading is best done by the message IDs not by the text
in the subject. You did nto delete the list of references in the
headers. So the threading takes its thread from the references that
were there.

Surely your software has the facility to generate a new Usenet posting?
What software are you using?

When you cut off too much, how can anyone know/understand what the 'topic'
is?
Look at the header, that doesn't tell anything but Öfficial List of
Conquerer's companions

This is a responce to what? If you reply at least allow the question to be
part of the message. This message as is means nothing to most. When people
change existing headings and remove the main message, how can others be
expected to know what it is all about?
