Complete Peerage 7 (1929): 223–225 (sub Kildare) includes an account of Maurice Fitz Thomas (Fitz Gerald), 4th Earl of Kildare, who served as Justiciar of Ireland in 1356, 1357, 1360, 1371, 1375, and 1377. The following information is provided regarding his date of death:

"He died in 1390, and was buried at Holy Trinity (now Christ Church Cathedral), Dublin." END OF QUOTE.

Footnote a on page 225 cites the following source:

"Lodge. It appears from the Irish Patent Rolls that he was living in May 1390 (Cal., vol. i, p. 147)." END OF QUOTE.

In Complete Peerage, vol. 14 (1998): 411, the reader is told to amend the death date of Maurice Fitz Thomas to read that he died 15 August 1390. The source given is G.W. Watson. However, we are not told what source Mr. Watson used for this date.

Elsewhere Dictionary of National Biography 7 (1908): 140–141 includes a biography of the earl under the name Maurice Fitzgerald, 4th Earl of Kildare.

On page 141, the following information is given regarding Earl Maurice's date of death:

"He died on 25 Aug. 1390, and was buried in the church of the Holy Trinity, now called Christ Church, in Dublin." END OF QUOTE.

DNB does not footnote the source for the date of death, so I'm unable to tell exactly where it obtained the month and day of the earl's death.

Regardless, I find that there is an an obit recorded for Maurice Fitz Thomas, Earl of Kildare, found in Crosthwaite Book of Obits & Martyrology of the Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity, Dublin (1844): 37. It reads as follows:

“xviij Id. Sept. [15 August] — Assumpcio beate Marie Virginis. Ob. Mauricius Fytz Thomas comes Kyldare anno domini Mo.ccco.nonagesimo.”).

The above source may be viewed at the following weblink:

The obit indicates that Maurice Fitz Thomas, 4th Earl of Kildare, died on 15 August 1390, specifically on the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary [15 August]. This information would appear to correct the DNB and also be a confirmation of the unsourced addition to Complete Peerage, Volume 14 made earlier by the venerable Mr. Watson.

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah
