Dear Group,

While on the subject of Pocahantas, I have read before that Edwina Ashley, the
wife of the Lord Mountbatten was a descendant as well. If true, can anyone show
how her descent can be traced?

Thank you,
Sean

...Rolfe continued to Plymouth, Devon with his small son who was also
sick, where he was left with his uncle to be brought up in England.
In Virginia Rolfe married a third time to Jane daughter of Capy
William Pierce or Powers and had a daughter Elizabeth.
Rolfe was killed in a horrible massacre near Henrico on 1622.
Thomas married in London Elizabeth Washington in 1632.She died in
childbirth 1633. Thomas went to Virginia to claim his inheritance and
left his daughter Anne with his cousin Anthony Rolfe. Anthony brought
her up as his daughter (he had just lost his own young daughter).
Anne married Peter Elwin of Thurning, Norfolk 1623-1695 from whom
many English people are descended...

Neither biography of Pocahontas that I have on hand ( both called
"Pocahontas," one by Grace Steele Woodward, Univ. of Okla. Press, 1969;
and the other by Frances Mossiker, Knopf, 1976) makes any mention of an
English marriage by Thomas Rolfe or, indeed any marriage to anyone other
than Jane Poythress. And they mention no children other than Jane Rolfe.

Have you any sources other than WFT for this information?

This has more than a whiff of "genealogical baby switching" about it.
Again, is there any proof of this?

Hi John (and all):

This Peter Elwin information came to me from various sources here and abroad,
not a Broderbund submission. There is a book covering the English branch
privately published down under in Australia. I was about to pick up a copy
last year when some material and addresses were lost on a trip out to
California). The proof should be listed in the book. I have some sketches
taken from its pages that I can dig out, but it may take a bit.

BTW, I use "WFT" to mark my guesses (WFT 1900-1910) versus other researcher's
guesses (Bet. 1900-1910). My "WFT" dates internally mark entries that are not
associated with the World Family Tree.

Thanks,

Dave Botts

James B. Ferguson was not the 2nd husband of Jane Rolfe - in fact, he's her
descendant! When I saw the name "Peachy R. Grattan" (a name that sticks in
one's mind, for some reason <g>), I knew something was amiss. Here's the
line I have from Matoaka (Pocahontas) down through Peachy's wife. Hope this
helps someone.

Anyone wishing to examine a good discussion of Rolfe descendants of the Indian
lady should consult ADVENTURERS OF PURSE AND PERSON, 3rd Edition. It discusses
the English marriage and child of Thomas Rolfe as well as Jane Rolfe, wife of
John Bolling.

To whom it may concern
Those researching the rolfe family I have read that thomas Rolphe
(realph) of the eastern shore born 1654 or there abouts is a decendant of
JOhn Rolfe.
could some one check the multitude of books that have been quoted to see
if this is indeed the case!
Sincerely
RAY

Most of this is from "Pocahontas' Descendants", the latest edition which
includes 3 sets of corrections/additions. (I loaned my copy, or I'd give
you the full name/authors).

The date of the marriage of Pocahontas & John Rolfe and her death date comes
from "The History of Henrico County" by Louis H. Manarin and Clifford
Dowdey, University Press of Virginia, 1984. There is a good bit of other
information in this volume about their circumstances. For it's information,
this work cites: John Rolfe's will dated 3/10/1622; Frances Mossiker,
'Pocahontas: The Life and the Legend' (New York, 1976), p. 169; Grace Steele
Woodward, 'Pocahontas' (Norman, Okla., 1969), p. 165; Marguerite Stuart
Qarles, 'Pocahontas (Bright Stream between Two Hills)' (Richmond, 1939, p.
25; John Rolfe, 'A True Relation of the State of Virginia Left by Sir Thomas
Dale, Knight, in May Last 1616' ed. John Melville Jennings (Charlottesville,
Va., 1951, p. xxiii; John Rolfe File, First Families of Virginia Papers,
Archives and Records Division, Virginia State Library, Richmond.
