Dear Newsgroup ~

Recently I posted the record of the marriage license of Henry de Grey,
of Codnor, co. Derby, and his wife, Joan de Cobham (see copy of post
below). C.P. 5 (1926): 127 (sub Grey) contains an extremely brief
account of the lives of this couple. The editor notes in a footnote
that Henry de Grey and his wife, Joan, and their daughter, Joan, were
legatees in the 1369 will of her mother, Joan de Cobham.

Henry de Grey's exact date of death is unknown. He was presumably
living in 1371 (approximate date of birth of his son, Richard), but
died prior to his father's death in 1392.

Complete Peerage gives no further details of his life or that of his
wife. However, it appears that Henry's wife, Joan, survived him and
was living in 1396, when she received a papal indult for plenary
remission [Reference: Papal Regs.: Letters 5 (1904): 31].

Dear Newsgroup ~

C.P. 5 (1926): 127 (sub Grey) contains an extremely brief account of
the life of Henry de Grey, Knt., son and heir apparent of John de
Grey, Knt., 3rd Lord Grey of Codnor. Regarding Henry de Grey's
marriage, it states the following:

"He m. Joan, da. of Reynold (de Cobham), Lord Cobham, by Joan, da. of
Thomas de Berkeley, Lord Berkeley."

Recently, I encountered the marriage license of Henry de Grey and his
wife, Joan de Cobham, in the register of William de Edington, Bishop
of Winchester:

"343. License granted to Reginald de Cobham, knight, and Joan his
wife for mass to be celebrated in any suitable place in the county and
diocese at the bishop's discretion; also for a marriage to be
celebrated between their daughter Joan and Henry son of John de Gray
at the castle of Sterburgh, diocese of Winchester. Southwark, 13
April 1358."

1346–1366, 2 (Hampshire Rec. Ser. 8) (1987): 45.
