apparently there is a royal ascent. I worked it out here.

Deputy Governor? The absent Governor was George Hamilton, 1st Earl of
Orkney.

Dr Robert Spotswood (various spellings) was dead by about 1680 - he died as
the replacement chirurgeon of the Tangier Garrison, Morocco - having married
Catherine Elliott nee Maxwell, the widow of the original chirurgeon, George
Elliott. His widow remarried her 3rd husband, Rev Dr George Mercer, at the
Garrison Church, Tangier, before she returned to England in late 1683. She
was listed as Mrs Mercer in the list of passengers of HMS Diamond which set
out on 15 Oct 1683.
Robert Spottswood also descended from Robert III on his father's side, via
the Lindsays.

FWIW the middle part of this descent, from Dorothea Spotswood to
William Maule of Glaster, is shown in Gary Boyd Roberts' RD600 (2004
ed.). GBR traces the earlier royal ancestry through William Maule's
mother Isabel Arbuthnott and ends up at Robert II, not Robert III.
This is curious, because the descent shown above to Robert III is to a
more recent king and thus a "better" descent by GBR's criteria.
Apparently GBR missed the royal descent of Sir Robert Maule of Panmure
- unless there's some flaw in this descent which isn't immediately
obvious.
Ian Cairns mentioned that Robert Spotswood is also descended from
Robert III through his father via the Lindsays. Weis' "Magna Charta
Sureties", 4th ed., shows this Lindsays to Spotswood but starts in
with Robert II, not Robert III. I don't readily see a descent in this
direction from Robert III - ???
