A MEDIEVAL HERITAGE:
THE ANCESTRY OF CHARLES II, KING OF ENGLAND
Neil D. Thompson, F.A.S.G.
Col. Charles M. Hansen, U.S.A.
INTRODUCTION
The essential unity of medieval Christendom manifests itself on many levels,
and one of these is genealogical. The ancestry of King Charles II of England
(1630-85) bears witness to this unity and at the same time displays a sweeping
cross-section of the major royal and noble families of medieval Europe
unmatched by any of his contemporaries. This reason alone would justify the
ten years' preliminary work which has gone into this project. At the same
time, the study serves a valuable secondary purpose for British or American
readers. Any person who has established to his or her satisfaction a descent
from any English or Scottish king prior to 1688, or, for that matter, from a
vast number of other persons of significance to British or continental
European history, will now be able to find in one place the furthest reaches
of the ancestry of the person from whom the descent is traced, with references
for further study. Thus this is not only a study of the ancestry of Charles
II, but also of such kings of England as Henry VII, Edward III, Edward I and
Henry I, the Stewart kings of Scotland, many kings of France, Spain, Portugal,
Denmark, Hungary and Poland, Holy Roman and Byzantine emperors, William the
Conqueror and Charlemagne himself, so far as it is presently known.
The caveat "as it is presently known" is important. This kind of project is,
and must be, a work of synthesis and not a work of original research. its
conclusions are only as reliable as its sources, which will vary immensely in
their use of primary data and in their interpretation of that data. It follows
that to some extent our work will be obsolete or incomplete even before it is
published. We solicit and will welcome additions and corrections to our work,
including any genealogical and biographical sources which have been
overlooked; new material will be published as it comes in, with full credit to
its author. Although we may f rom time to time f ind ~f ault with our
predecessors, we freely acknowledge our debt to them. "The dwarf sees farther
than the giant, when he has the giant's shoulders to mount on."
