The following is the first couple of pages from Sir Harris Nicolas's
"Memoirs of the Life & Times of Sir C. Hatton", 1847 (no mention of
Hatton's illegitimate daughter Elizabeth in the index)
LIKE so many men who have risen to the highest
stations in England, SIR CHRISTOPHOR HATTON owed
little besides the rank of gentleman to his birth. He
was the third son of William Hatton, of Holdenby in
Northamptonshire, by Alice, daughter of Lawrence
Saunders, of Harrington in that county. The pedigree
of Hatton is traced beyond records, and
consequently to an apocryphal source. Ivo, a nobleman of
Normandy, the supposed ancestor of the Fitz-Nigells
Barons of Hatton, and of other families in Cheshire, is
said to have had a sixth son, Wolfaith, Lord of Hatton
in that county, from whom descended, through a long
series of Knights and Esquires of some local but of
little general fame, Piers or Peter Hatton, of Quisty
Birches in Cheshire, whose third son, Henry Hatton,
founded a new line by marrying, in the reign of Henry
the Seventh, Elizabeth, the sister and eventually sole
heiress of William Holden, of Holdenby in Northamptonshire,
Esq. Their eldest son, John Hatton, settled
at Holdenby, and had three sons, William, the eldest;
John Hatton, of Gravesend in Kent, ancestor of the
Viscounts Hatton, now represented by the Earl of Winchelsea
and Nottingham; and Christopher. William
Hatton, the eldest son, had, by Alice Saunders, an only
daughter, Dorothy, who married John Newport, of Horningham
in Warwickshire, Esquire, and three sons, viz.
Francis and Thomas, who both died young and unmarried;
and CHRISTOPHER, who, as heir to his brothers,
succeeded to the estates at Holdenby and made
the name of Hatton historical, if not imperishable.
CHRISTOPHER HATTON was born at Holdenby in
1540, and was left an orphan at the age of six years,
by the death of his father in August 1546. It does
not appear how long he enjoyed a mother's care; nor
can it be ascertained precisely when, by the deaths of
his two elder brothers, he succeeded to the family inheritance,
but probably before he became of age. There
is some reason to believe that his maternal uncle, William
Saunders, superintended his education; but nothing
of his early life is known until he entered as
a Gentleman Commoner at St. Mary's Hall, Oxford,
when he was probably about fifteen or sixteen years
old. He quitted the University without a degree, and
became a member of the Inner Temple on the 26th
of May 1560,....

If you are interested in the Brokesby and Shirley families, then I can post
these also. Through the Shirley connection Hatton's ancestry may be traced
to the medieval aristocracy and eventually royalty. Let me know if you
require details.

Would anyone be able to comment on the following line (in which I have
no great faith)?
Henry Hatton = Elizabeth Holden (see above)
John Hatton = Joan Westby (see above)
John Hatton = Dionis War
John Hatton = Jane Shute (daughter of Robert Shute Justice of the
Queen's Bench)
Sir Christopher Hatton =
Robert Hatton =
Richard Hatton (died in England 1648) = Margaret ----------
1) Mary Hatton = Zachary Wade
Mary Hatton emigrated to Maryland as a child with her mother and her
stepfather, Capt. Richard Banks.
2) Eleanor Hatton (born Apr 3 1642 in England--died 1725 Charles County,
Maryland = Major Thomas Brooke (born Jun 23 1632 in Battel,
Hampshire--died 1676 Brookfield Manor, Calvert County, Maryland).
I descend from both Mary Hatton and Eleanor Hatton. But their supposed
ancestry has all the hallmarks of the-name's-the-same, especially the
fact that it came with no sources whatever.
Many thanks,
John Steele Gordon

Christopher Hatton [1st Baron], 1st surv. s. and h. of Sir Christopher
Hatton, K.B., sometime of Clay Hall, in Barking, Essex, but afterwards of
Kirby Hall, Northants (being cousin and h. male of the well-known Sir
Christopher Hatton, the Lord Chancellor), by Alice da. of Thomas Fanshawe,
of Ware Park, Herts ..........
If Nicolas and CP are correct that would make the above Sir Christopher
Hatton, KB the s&h of the John of Gravesend mentioned by Nicolas, thus the
two John's in JSG message should only be on generation.
CP does not name any other sons of Sir Christopher Hatton KB of Clay Hall
Note that Burkes ExP, 1883, p 269 states that the Sir Christopher Hatton
who m Alice Fanshaw was the great-great nephew of Lord Chancellor Hatton!!!
