Barony of Winterbourne St. Martin Dorset.

Many of the lands which later formed this barony were held, at the
time of the Domesday Book, by the widow of Hugh fitz Grip former sheriff
of Dorset. The estate seems to have come to the control of Alfred i. of
Lincoln by the start of the twelfth century. Alfred i. d. post 1130
leaving Robert, s. and h., who d. ante 1156 when Alfred ii., s. and h.,
is mentioned in the records.
Alfred ii. d. 1198 leaving Alfred iii. d. 1240. Alfred iv., s. and
h., d.s.p. 1264 when his heirs were the son of his sister MARGERY
together with his sisters BEATRICE and AUBREY.
MARGERY, whose son's inheritance of one-third of the estate increased
to one-half, m. Roger fitz Pain d. 1237. In 1264 she was represented by
her son Robert, lord of Poorstock, who inherited her share of the
barony. These lands remained with the fitz Pain family.
BEATRICE, whose inheritance of one-third of the barony increased to
one-half, m.- de Gouiz. She d. ante Jan. 1278 leaving her son William
de Gouiz whose heirs in 1299 were his daughters Joan and Alice, both
minors.
JOAN, whose inheritance of one-quarter of the barony increased to
one-half, m. John Latimer, guardian of both Joan and Alice. John d.
1336; Joan d. 1346, Robert her son was heir.
AUBREY, who inherited one-third of the barony, d.s.p. circa 1277 when
her lands were divided between the heirs of her two sisters.

The death of NICHOLAS POYNTZ just prior to 12 July 5 Edward ii. (1311)
resulted in the following:

-12 July a writ was issued for an Inquistion on his lands, the
Escheator ordered that his lands be taken into the king's hand.
-28 July Custody of Nicholas' lands was ordered to be delivered to
Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Gloucester and Hertford.
-3 August a Grant was made to William le Latymer of custody of the
lands and the marriage of the heir.
-9 October Custody of the lands and marriage of the heirs was sold to
Hugh le Despenser for 500 marks.
-21 October Custody of the lands and heirs was sold to William Rydel
for 700 marks.
-18 December a Grant of custody and marriage of the heir was made to
William le Latymer for 700 marks.
-19 December Acquittance for 700 marks was given to William Rydel.
-20 December Remission was made to William le Latymer for 400 marks of
the fine of 700 marks which he made to the king.

-7 October 7 Edward ii.(1313) William le Latymer offered Joan, daughter
of John le Latymer in marriage to Henry Poyntz, heir of Nicholas
Poyntz.

-28 July 8 Edward ii.(1314) John le Latymer had previously been given
custody of the lands until Hugh was of full age by reason of a demise
made to him by William le Latymer.

-12 February 10 Edward ii.(1317) Hugh Pointz was given seisin of his
father's lands having proved his age before the escheator.

-1 April 10 Edward iii.(1336) Joan, daughter of Hugh Poyntz, was
granted 10 li. rent yearly as a charge on the manor of Stoke St. Edward
Dorset.

My suggestion is that Hugh Poyntz did marry Joan daughter of John
Latymer and Joan, daughter and co-heir of William de Gouiz, circa
7 October 1313. That Hugh's daughter Joan, on attaining the age of
21 years in 1336, was granted the 10 li. yearly rent by her father.
Whether Joan was the mother of Nicholas Poyntz is uncertain as it
would appear he was born on 24 August 1318. Remember that John le
Latymer had custody of Hugh Poyntz and the lands of Hugh's inheritance
from prior to 28 July 1314 until 12 February 1317.

Regards to all

Tony Ingham
