The footnotes to the Dunbar article in the 'Complete Peerage' discuss
some of the male descendants of the early Earls of Dunbar
(specifically CP IV:504 note c). Unfortunately the language does not
make it completely clear which person these sons belong to.

In the notes for Gospatric de Dunbar, 1st Earl of Dunbar (k. 22 Aug
1138), it says:
'He had two elder brothers, Dolfin, as in the text, and Waltheof, who
m. Sigrid, and was living about 1126. He had 2 sons: (1) Alan, living
16 Aug. 1139, who d.s.p.m.s. (2) Gospatric, possibly illegit., who was
living about 1156. He had a son, Waltheof, who d.s.p.m. before 1200.'

Are Alan and Gospatric the sons of Earl Gospatric, or his elder
brother Waltheof? Is the later Waltheof son of the illeg. Gospatric?

The Dunbar article in *Scots Peerage* mentions these people in vol. III,
pp. 243-245, but uses the "indent" method, which I've reproduced here:

1. Dolfin
2. Waldeve/Waltheof
(1) Alan
(2) Gospatric
i. Waldeve/Waltheof
3. Gospatric Earl of Dunbar

Note that the later Waldeve/Waltheof is described (in the original records)
as "Waldeve son of Gospatric", without explaining which Gospatric. That he
was a son of *that* Gospatric is, according to *Scots Peerage*, "probable".
