Dear Newsgroup ~

Complete Peerage 9 (1936): 42 (sub Moleyns) indicates that William
Moleyns, Knt. (died 1429) was survived by his 2nd wife, Anne
Whalesborough, who married (2nd) Edmund Hampden. Anne reportedly left
a will dated 28 Feb. 1486/7 (P.C.C., 1 Milles) and "was buried in the
Grey Friars' church, London."

Curiously, the date of the probate of Lady Moleyns' will is not given
by the editor of Complete Peerage. The reason for this is explained
by the following record found in the Register of John Morton,
Archbishop of Canterbury, 1486-1500, Vol. 1, pg. 107:

"No. 333. Commission to Lady Eleanor Manyngham alias Hungerford,
daughter of the decease, to adminster the goods of Anne Molence,
widow, intestate, because her pretended testament was nt exhibited by
John Hampden and John Chambre, chaplain, the executors named in the
testament, and was not proved. Inv. by 7 June. Lambeth, 2 May 1489."
[Reference: Christopher Harper-Bill, Register of John Morton,
Archbishop of Canterbury, 1486-1500, Vol. 1 (Canterbury and York
Society, vol.75) (1987), pg. 107].

We see from the above record that Anne Moleyns was deceased shortly
before 2 May 1489, when administration on her estate was granted to
her daughter and heiress, Lady Eleanor Manningham. It appears her
will was not proved.

Anne (Whalesborough) Moleyns is in the ancestry of two colonial
immigrants, John Nelson and Maria Johanna Somerset.

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah

I have only two children for her, both by her first husband. Nevertheless
she has a large number of interesting descedants.

I have found
HM The Queen, Lady Diana Spencer, Sara Ferguson

Gateway descendants are
Herbert Pelham 1600-1673
Maria Joanna Somerset 1670-1698
Anne Humphrey 1625-

No doubt there are more.

A surprising descendants is James Scott, Duke of Monmouth 1649-1685, the
unfortunate son of King Charles II.

Louis II Prince of Monaco 1870-1949 and his Monegask descendants.

Ernst August Prince of Hannover 1954- husband of Princess Caroline of
Monaco.

Best wishes

Mulling over my Moleyns, thanks to Leo van de Pas's comments, I fear I have
misread CP and mixed up my Williams. It does NOT seem that William Bladen
descends from Anne Whalesborough. The mistaken descent was through
Catherine Moleyns, who married John Howard, duke of Norfolk (d. 22 Aug 1485;
cf. CP, IX, 612). I had Catherine as a daughter of Anne Whalesborough and
William Moleyns, d. 8 May 1429. In fact, CP lists her as daughter of this
William Moleyns's father, William Moleyns, d. 8 Jun 1425. The senior
William Moleyns's wife is given in CP (IX, 41) simply as Margery (d. 26 Mar
1439). CP note n, IX, 41: "She (Margery) was probably a Whalesborough. . .
She held Pengelly in St. Neot's, Cornwall." CP, note p, refers to a brass
at Stoke Poges, where William Sr. and Margery were buried: "Brss, with
figures of himself. . .and his wife, with the inscription: HIC JACENT
WILLELMVS MOLYNS MILES QVI OBIJT VIIJ DIE MENSIS JVNII ANNO DOMINI M CCCC
XXV ET DOMINA MARGERIA VXOR EIVS. . . .Arms: (i) Three piles wavy conjoined
at base (i.e. Mauduit used by Moleyns); (ii) Moleyns (Mauduit) impaling 3
bends within a bordure with roundels (Whalesborough)."

I apologize for the error, and thank Leo for his comments that inspired me
to double check. I now wonder if there is any further information available
on the parentage of this Margery, "probably a Whalesborough?"

Thanks, Polly Zashin
