An ancestral line of long standing interest to me is that of Nicholas
Longford, Knt, of
Ellaston, co. Stafford, who died 28 Feb 1358.
His ancestry was covered in "Some Notes on the Family History of Nicholas
Longford, Sheriff of Lancashire in 1413," by William Wingfield Longford,
D.D. in TRANSACTIONS OF THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF LANCASHIRE AND CHESHIRE
FOR THE YEAR 1934, vol. 86
Most of what follows is drawn from the lineage shown in the above article
(Meynell information follows Ms. Bevan's last post). Does any of this
correspond to the newest investigations on the Longford family undertaken
by Bevan, Carter, Guido or others?
Thank you.

Tilley [653] claims, citing Lysons, that a FitzErcald heiress m.
Oliver FitzNigel and their firstborn took the name of Nigel de
Longford. Citing Cox, in "Churches" v. 3, he notes that Margaret,
dau. of Nigel de Longford was wife of Nicholas Longford. He proposes
that the words "wife" and "dau." may have been transposed or that the
Longford heiress gave her surname to her son. Citing Earwaker's
"Cheshire", Tilley also says that "the ancestor of Oliver FitzNigel
was a cousin of Hugh Lupus, Earl of Chester; was Constable of Chester,
and held the Barony of Halton."

[605:v3p98,761-2; 194:v17p151; 668:v4p442]
The papal dispensation does not specify the source of kinship,
mentioning only that they married without knowledge of the
relationship. In Chetham Society 42: 113 there is a pedigree showing
Elizabeth Longford (sister of Sir Nicholas Longford who d. 1357) as
married to Thomas Foljambe. If this is the Thomas who was father of
Sir Godfrey Foljambe (d. 1375) she would have been Sir Godfrey's
stepmother presumably, but I have found nothing else about her or this
marriage. Joan Longford's son Nicholas Montgomery married Sir
Godfrey's granddaughter Margaret. If this is the source of the mutual
relationship then the common ancestor would be Sir John Longford (see
my previous posting on this family). I would be greatly indebted to
anyone who can elucidate this situation. Would a stepmother be
counted in the degrees of kinship?
3) Sir Nicholas MONTGOMERY
Of Cubley and Marston Montgomery. Knight by Feb 1414. Served on
various commissions 1414-31. Constable of the duchy of Lancaster
castle of Tutbury, co. Stafford 1414 until his death. Steward of the
lordship of Tutbury 1416-22, the duchy manors of Melbourne by 1420 and
Wirksworth by 1428. Justice of the Peace co. Derby 1419-23. Sheriff
co. Stafford 1430-1, and of cos. Nottingham and Derby 1431-2. MP

of that time in personal attendance upon King Henry V.

Chetham Soc. [87], Cox [665], and Yeatman in "Feudal History of
Derbyshire" call her dau. of Edmund Appleby and Agnes, dau. of Alured
Solney. From Nichols [29:v4p442] who cites original sources, it
appears that, although Edmund Appleby m. an Agnes Solney, she could
not have been the same Agnes, sister of John Solney, who m. Nicholas
Longford.
6) Sir Nicholas MONTGOMERY
Of Cubley and Marston Montgomery, co. Derby. Knight by Jul 1381.
Served on numerous commissions1377-1419. Justice of the Peace, co.

This pedigree demonstrates 2 things (Rosie's excellent assessment).
1. It was Margaret Solney not Appleby who was married to Ralph
Longford
2. As I feared, there are two collateral lines with Sir Nicholas
Longfords.
That is why Longford pedigrees are so confused for the 1400s. Ralph is
brother to Sir Nicholas Longford d.1415
