Hello Bill,

The emperor Andronicus [Andronikos] (1183-1185) was definitely NOT the son of the emperor John Comnenus; he was either a nephew or grandnephew (I don't have my sources to hand to indicate exactly what the lineage was).

For a good if brief read on his career, see Runciman's History of the Crusades [more details: Ostrogorsky, History of the Byzantine State].

I will check out the details later, and post same if someone else of the list does not do so first.

Good luck, and good hunting.

John

[SNIP]
There were lots of "Johns" related in various ways to Andronikos I but I assume
the John referred to was Ioannes II Komnenos Dukas who m. Piroska (St.Irene) of
Hungary.
1. John I
...2. Alexios I
......3. John II (the one referred to)
......3. Isaak
.........4. Andronicus

Who is the father of Andronicus I Comnenus, who ruled the Byzantine
empire 1183-1185?
Conflicting secondary sources have him as either the son of John II
Comnenus or the son of Isaac Comnenus (brother of John II).

My notes, based on Paul Theroff's files, indicate that
John II had both a brother and a son named Isaak, and that it
was the son who was the father of Andronicus.

John (The...@AOL.com) wrote to me off-list on October 20:
"I think Mr. Theroff is in error if he has Andronicus
(d. 1185) as nephew, thereby, of Manuel Comnenus (d. 1180).
"Andronicus Comnenus was a very mature individual
(age-wise anyway) when he carried off cousin Theodora
in Palestine; I believe he will be found to be the son of
Isaac Comnenus, BROTHER of John II (d. 1143), and thereby a
nephew of John II, and not a grandson of John II."

He is correct. It was Isaak brother, not son, of John II
who was the father of Andronicus. So is Paul Theroff
correct, and so are my notes correct. I stupidly misread my
notes, and I apologize to John and to any others I may have
misled, and to Paul Theroff for mis-citing his file.

Excellent, _El Pollo Loco_!

You are *beginning* to understand your limitations. <g>

It's always good to see some progress.

But, I notice you are still trusting websites, rather than consulting
print sources.
