ORANGE AND AUGUSTA COUNTIES, WITH TITHABLES, DELINQUENTS, PETITIONERS,
1730-1754. Peggy S. Joyner (comp.), xxv, 73 pp., ind., 1985. The Northern
Neck was the land between the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers. It
extended westward from the Chesapeake Bay to the Allegheny Mountains (in
what is now West Va.). To purchase land in the Northern Neck, a man first
had to obtain a warrant and survey. Only then, if no one else had legal
claim, was he issued a land grant. The volumes in this series identify
people obtaining warrants/surveys. For people who received grants, see
separate entries for Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants. NOTE: None of
the land referenced in this first volume lies in modern-day Augusta Co.,
which was much bigger in the mid-1700s than it is today. (Item#: VA-901

JOHN ALEXANDER--A NORTHERN NECK PROPRIETOR, HIS FAMILY, FRIENDS AND KIN.

immigrant John Alexander acquired large tracts of land in Accomack and
Northampton counties in the mid-1600s, then major holdings in King George
Co. His descendants can also be found in Stafford, Arlington, and Fairfax
