(Scotland) Scotlands People New Website Launched

Scotlands People is the official website of the Scottish Government for
searching government records and archives. It was created from the merger of
the General Register Office of Scotland and the National Archives of
Scotland in 2011.

This week Scotlands People launched its new revamped website. For the first
time we can research the index to records, including statutory records of
births, deaths and marriages free of charge. Charges will only be made when
the records are viewed or downloaded. The new website also permits access
across digital devices and an enhanced search function.

Some new features include the choice between a quick search for people
across all records indexed by personal name, or advanced search for specific
types of records.

If you are a registered user, you will need to login in with your password
and you will be prompted to set a user name and password email address and
password. If you have not registered previously you need to login in. The
site has videos on how to login, register, checking your account and about

Note: In accordance with National Records of Scotland policy, images of
statutory birth records less than 100 years old, marriages less than 75
years old, deaths less than 50 years old and of divorces, civil partnerships
and dissolutions of a civil partnership are not available to view online.

Civil registration was introduced in Scotland 1 January 1855 replacing the
Church of Scotland system. As of that date it was compulsory to register
births, marriages and deaths and standardization of format was required.

Scotlands People is a pay-per -view site except for those areas mentioned
above that are free. The free search of indexes cover birth, death and
marriage registers, census returns, church registers, valuation rolls and
legal records (like wills and testaments and coats of arms). To read about

Scotlands People is a partnership between the National Records of Scotland
and the Court of the Lord Lyon. The Court of Lord Lyon is the official
heraldry office for Scotland.

Unless they have changed their practice, one gets a scan of the whole
page of the register, which will include entries for others than those
for whom one requested an image.

Seeing other records gives one a wider knowledge of the general
registration practices which may then aid interpretation of the record
of interest.
