I am looking for any Yiddish, Jewish or Hebrew name that could be for
Sophie? Sage, her granddaughter would like to know what her's would be as
she is named after Sophie. Please give me all suggestions and maybe one
will ring a bell. Thanks, Harriett Quinn in Whitefish, MT

Almost any name that starts with a sybbilant sound might be the original
Hebrew or Yiddish name that your "Sophie" came from. I'm attachign a long list,
and "asterisking" my top chocies. However, her name could ahve been completely
unrelated to "Sophie" and could have been almost anything....

Sarah
Tziril
Sonia
**Bina or Chachmah (Hebrew for wisdom which is the translation of Sophia)
Sima
Simona
Shulamit
Shira
Shalchevet
Shalvah
Simcha
Sheina
Sharona
Shifra
Shprintza

Tzivia
*Tzofia (Rabbi Kolatch gives this a a Hebrew name meaning "watcher, guardian")
Tzippora

If none of these jog any memory paths, and you can't find out from the
Hebrew/Yiddish name from Sophia's memorial gravestone, then I would suggest
going for something like Bina or Chachmah which means the same as "sage" and
"sophia" - i.e. wise, wisdom, or else the tried and true Sarah, or else the
modern Hebrew Tzofia. How about Sarah Bina???or Tzofia Bina???
