I'm doing some 1871 vital records translating and have come across a word I can't
define and can't find in my dictionaries. It is spelled bet-ayin-gimel. It is some
type of occupation. Can anyone help?

It might be a misprint of ayin-bet-gimel - Im Bas/Ben Gilo/Giloh - which
literally means *with his/her age mate* but is popular used in wedding
invitations to link the names of the groom and bride and means *with his/her
intended*

The gimel might also be a misprint for a *hey* and thus means Bezrat
Hashem - with G-d's help.

It is important to remember that people in the previous generations
occasionally made spelling misprints as well.

This is what I came up with. So according to the info below, possibly
it is an acronym of some sort.

Bet: the Hebrew equivalent of a B.

Ayin: a Yiddish vowel that seems mostly to be used for the O and Eh
sounds in Yiddish.

Gimel: the Hebrew equivalent of a G.

Sincerely,

Lara Clark

From the the context it would seem that this is an acronym for Baal
Agoloh - a wagon or coach driver/owner.
