Hi Susan,

My experience with Yetta is:

In Russian, the letter E sounds like YEH.
In Polish, the letter E sounds like EH.
In Russian-era Polish records pre-1868, Jewish girls were named Eta, Etel,
Etla, Etli.
In Cyrillic post-1868 (Poland) and elsewhere in Russian Empire, the name was
written as Eta, but pronounced Yeta. Same with Etel/Yetel, Etla/Yetla,
EtliYetli.

When Russian immigrants came to America, they used Yetta, possibly Etta or
Ethel, or other variants.

In my family, Etta was my great-grandmother from Galicia (d. 1909). One of
her granddaughters was named Etta, two others Ethel. They had no idea for
whom they were named; in fact, my Aunt Ethel (Ettie) hated the name so much
that she now calls herself Kelly.

They are all (except Kelly) the same name.

There is another name that is similar : Ytta, Ita, Itte, etc. which often
became Ida.

Shelley

Yettas in my husband family have all become Henrietta as the
name has gone down through the family.

These days, instead of abbreviating it to Yetta, we tend to
abbreviate it to Henri.
