My grandfather was born in Tomashov, Poland on 5 July 1905/6. On all the
documents I have, he has been responsible for giving his name and he has always
given it as HAROLD SMITH. (his second wife filled out his death certificate
with same name) He gives his father's name as Bernard Smith. On one document,
he gives his mother's name as Sabra Note and another (may have been step-mother)
as Basha. (Other than Basha, none of these sound Polish to me.)

He was brought with his siblings (William, Victor, Samuel, Beatrice -- later
Trink, Ada -- later Riberdy) to America when he was about nine years old by a
Jewish organization which 'spirited' him away in the night and took him in to US
through port of San Franciscos. His brothers apprenticed him as an electrician.
He served in WWII. He passed away in 1975.

Any of this sound familiar to anyone? Any suggestions about how I might find a
record for 'Smith' in Tomashov, Poland? Thank you!

Jennifer,

There are two Tomashovs in Poland,Tomaszow Lubelski and Tomaszow
Majoveski. You must know in which city he was born. I have been in
Tomaszow Lubelski and have research their documents for many years. I
have carefully examined every available vital record for that city and
have never seen a SMITH. You will have to learn the original name
before you can continue with your research.

Good luck.

You may already know all this, if so forgive me, I'm new online. Have you
tried YIVO in NYC? If you can get there its best, but if you are really
specific they can be helpful sometimes by phone. I'm thinking of the Hebrew
Immigrant Aid Society records in case they were the *spiriters/spiritors* as
well as Tomashov's memorial book [Sefer Zikron L'kehilet Tomashov-Mazoviesk,
1969] for any names that seemed similar. Also check ships' passenger lists
for 1914/15 soundex Smith to SF. Good luck. Carol Sitrin
